The 8th Pacific Mini Games closed on 2 October 2009 after 11 days of exciting competitions across 15 sports.
There were many magical moments , but three truly outstanding highlights were:
Fiji topping the medal tally with 32 Gold medals, from New Caledonia in second place, Tahiti in third, Samoa in fourth, and the host country, Cook Islands, achieving its best ever result in fifth place;
Samoa dealing emphatically with the tragedy of the Tsunami striking their homeland midway through the Games by blitzing the Rugby 7s competition and golden girl Ele Opolege once again smashing a Commonwealth Weightlifting record emulating her achievements from the 2007 South Pacific Games; and
Most importantly, the warmth and generous hospitality shown to the visiting athletes and delegations by the wonderful people of the Cook Islands.
The Pacific Games Council says Meitaki Ma'ata Cook Islands, Farewell Aere Ra and we all hope to visit your shores again one day.
Thank you for Sharing the Moments!
