IT’S MORE THAN JUST A GAME
The WRFL 2008 Season has given the entire football community the opportunity to celebrate 150 years of Australian Football.
Community football is the heart and soul of our game – in 2008, throughout Australia, more than 600,000 people played Australian football and many more, coached, umpired, officiated, volunteered and supported our game at all levels.
The Western Region Football League is a vibrant part of that impressive statistic and my involvement with the League constantly reminds me that “it is more than just a game.”
We are constantly reminded of the problems of obesity, diabetes and other general health issues that our community face, which further emphasizes the importance and relevance that participation in community football, brings to the health and well being of all sporting lovers.
Finals football is always full of the excitement of the contest, joy and often disappointment and I think it is apt as this year also coincides with the imminent Beijing Olympics to quietly ponder that Olympic ideal that expresses the notion of competing, abiding by the rules, displaying true sportsmanship “for the glory of our sport and the honor of our teams.”
Perhaps this too is what our final series should be all about.
Good luck and best wishes to those teams that are still striving for that elusive Premiership, but more importantly congratulations and well done to the players, the Coaches, Managers, Umpires, Club Officials, Sponsors and Supporters for your part in making season 2008 a season that will hold fond memories for all.
