As a former player of our great game, and one who graduated from Pascoe Vale FC, we all know that finals time is the best time of year for any footballer.
A season’s worth of training and effort will be decided in coming weeks, with the goal of a premiership driving every player who is lucky enough to represent his club in September action.
I wish to congratulate every player, coach and official for their achievements so far this year in qualifying to be part of the finals in their grade.
I also wish to congratulate the WRFL for the way their competition is run, and the opportunities it provides to so many young men aiming to realise their dreams.
The Western Region Football League, like so many leagues across metropolitan and regional Australia, is a vital part in the success of our game as Australia’s only indigenous sport.
It is ovals across the WRFL where children first begin to enjoy the game and, as they grow older and develop their skills, they aspire to improve.
It is here that the game becomes a way of life for many as they share in a healthy club environment – a unique part of the culture of our game.
I wish all teams the best of luck for each final, and urge every supporter to enjoy the matches in the spirit that marks our game. The memories of playing with your teammates, and working towards a common goal, will stay with you for a lifetime.
Good luck.
