MEDIA RELEASE – WESTERN REGION FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Resignation of President, Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer
After almost 10 years of individual service to the Western Region Football League (WRFL), President – Diana Taylor, Vice-President - Stephen Myall and Chief Executive Officer – John Batty, have announced their resignations from the WRFL with effect at the Annual General Meeting on 1 December 2009.
During the period of involvement in the WRFL by Diana Taylor, Stephen Myall and John Batty, the WRFL has experienced increased player registrations and community participation.
Over the past three years, the implementation of the 2007-2009 WRFL Strategic Plan by the WRFL Board and Administration has delivered significant achievements, including:
· Consistent annual growth in registered player numbers across the Competition
· Cultural change through the decoupling of the WRFL from alcohol sponsorship and the adoption of the National Alcohol Code of Conduct
· A ‘light alcohol’ only 2009 Finals Series
· Establishing the Women’s Football Foundation with Patron Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard MP
· Strong financial management and solid financial annual returns
· Coaching and skill development initiatives to support strong competition
· Initiation of health & wellbeing programs through Women’s Health West and Beyond Blue
· A 40% reduction in the number of reportable incidents since 2007
· Introduction of AFL Victoria recommended Umpire structure and development framework
· Expansion of skill development and personnel support of the Junior Interleague Program
Outgoing WRFL President Diana Taylor stated that “I wish to acknowledge and thank the selfless contribution to Community Football of Stephen Myall, the WRFL Board Members, CEO John Batty and the Administration. I am privileged to have served the WRFL and its Clubs as a volunteer in various roles for almost 10 years and to have lead and developed the largest sporting organisation in Melbourne’s West.”
Stephen Myall summed up his Football experience in the WRFL by saying that “It has been a privilege to participate in the administration and development of Community Football with Diana Taylor, John Batty and the Board of the WRFL.”
Outgoing WRFL CEO John Batty also confirmed that “After a journey in Australian Rules Football of nearly 50 years as a player, official and administrator, I would like to thank the many people who have shared my journey in Football for their support and advice in respect of an administration that has seen the WRFL become financially stable and continuing to provide many families access to Australian Rules in the Western Region of Melbourne.”
Diana Taylor, Stephen Myall and John Batty also acknowledged and thank AFL Victoria for its continued commitment and support to Community Football and are confident that the game of Australian Rules Football will continue to flourish in the Western Region as the WRFL enters a new phase of leadership and administration.
The new WRFL President and Vice-President will be announced at the WRFL Annual General Meeting on 1 December 2009.
