Message from the Deputy Prime Minister, The Hon Julia Gillard MP and Patron of the Western Region Football League Women’s Football Foundation
My congratulations to the Women's Football Foundation on their Western Region Football League season launch for 2008. I would also like to extend my congratulations to Diana Taylor on her election to President of the WRFL, one of the largest suburban football leagues in Victoria.
As the patron of the Women's Football Foundation, I'm very proud of the work undertaken by the Foundation over the last year.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Foundation's Advisory Group who have been working hard to make sure events such as this evening go ahead.
The launch of the Foundation last year was an acknowledgement by the WRFL of the important role women play in our local western suburbs community footy clubs --both on the field and off. Women are playing football in increasing numbers with their roles now extending to umpiring. The fact that this League now has a woman as President is recognition of the valuable contribution women have to make and an acknowledgement of their capabilities. Every Club in our League has women who volunteer tirelessly and let us not forget either, the many mothers of our junior players who week in, week out bring their children to training sessions and match days as well as undertaking many of the behind the scene jobs, thus ensuring our next generation of footballers.
I'd also like to thank each and every one of you who make a difference to our community by playing or helping out in your respective clubs. I fully appreciate the hard work and long hours of preparation that go into ensuring the weekend games of Aussie rules is played across every suburb and town in this state. League administration, club committees, coaching staff, trainers, runners, canteen volunteers and match day officials are all to be commended for their commitment.
I encourage you all to support the events and opportunities hosted by the Women's Football Foundation in season 2008 .
My best wishes to you all for a successful and enjoyable 2008 Footy Season.
