2010 Herb Pascarl Medal Preview
By Adam Lux
The best on ground medal in the Division One Grand Final is named in honour of one the league’s founders, Herb Pascarl. He was in part responsible for the league’s formation in 1931 and was a league delegate for 20 years. He was also a member, President and administrator of the Parkside Football Club, has a pavilion named in his honour there and is considered one of the legends of the club.
The Grand Final teams are laden with stars. Spotswood has the best ball-carrier in the business in Chris O’Keefe, a terrific long-kicking centre-man in Mick Lewis and another great midfield leader in its coach, Ben Kelly. It would surprise no-one if that trio was to supply the medal winner. Up forward, the Woodsmen have the best forward in the game in ‘Crackers’ Keenan and his partner in crime, Luke Molan, is another gun – they could both win the match of their own boots. Ruckman Lachie McGhie is a star and looms as a pivotal player, whilst Daniel Mangan and Ryan Noye are such good defenders that they too could catch the eye.
Albion, of course, has stars of its own. No-one can doubt the explosive talent that is Shaydon Bloomfield and he, along with other forwards, Steve Pearce and the exciting youngster Todd Finco could be match winners. James Stephens is as hard-working as they come in the centre-half forward position and would be more than a worthy winner on his season to date. In the midfield, Daniel Bonnici has had an outstanding finals series, whilst hardworking Brad Hewat and the fleet-footed Marcus Smith will be important players. Jamie Watts has emerged as a goal-kicking midfielder in the finals and if the Cats prevail will be certainly be an eye-catcher, whilst the assured figure of Glenn Manton, so crucial in his club’s revival, may well be the difference maker in defence.
