At the 2009 WRFL season launch held last week at the Sunshine Golf Club two new Life Memberships were awarded by WRFL President Diana Taylor. Mark McDonald and Ian Hamm were the recipients. Mark McDonald has been involved in the WRFL since 1973 when he started as a junior with the Deer Park Football Club. He began umpiring in 1975 and after a period in the bush came back to Deer Park where he as a player and then on the committee before becoming Club Administrator. Mark was a founding member of the Leagueâs appeals / hearing committee and has served as the Chairman for many years. In fact Mark has been involved for over 21 years. Mark is a life member of Deer park, he has been awarded a Football Victoria Recognition of Service Award and The Australian Sports medal.
Ian Hamm began with the WRFL in 1999 as a consultant for the implementation of the racial and religious vilification policy, a ground breaking move by a suburban league. He joined the Board of Directors in 2000 and became President in 2002. Ian was at the helm through the heady days of The Club TV show which featured the Hammerheads. Ian was involved in initiating many the multicultural programs and always a great supporter of the interleague program.
At the launch both men spoke of their passion for the game and especially at the grass roots level. Congratulations to Mark and Ian on achieving the highest personal award in the WRFL.
