Congratulations to Brent Walker for 300 games. June 11th, 2008 source: DC
This week marks a special occasion for the Hoppers Crossing Football Club, with loyal player Brent Walker playing his 300th game for the Warriors. “Splinter” as he is better known is part of the furniture down at Hogan’s Rd, and has been so for many years.
He began way back in 1985 where he started in the Under 9’s and played through the age levels until Under 15’s. He then had the opportunity to play for Williamstown in the under 19’s for two years. A lifestyle change resulted in packing his bags to Creswick where his father Doug managed the American Hotel in Creswick. Splinter played two years for East Ballarat (now known as Eastpoint).
After returning back to Melbourne he played for Coburg in the VFL where he played a handful of senior games and also won the reserves Best and Fairest.
Brent returned back to Hogan’s Rd in 2000 and played an integral part in Hoppers Crossing’s future success. Brent was part of the unforgettable inaugural premiership team where the Warriors kicked a goal after the siren to win by 6 points. Two years later, another 6 point Grand Final win gave Brent and the Club their second Division 1 Premiership. “Without doubt, the 2 senior flags I played in have been my football highlights, they are hard to come by and am fortunate to have been a part of them” As years have passed, The high volume of young local talent coming through combined with Hoppers Crossings strong recruiting approach has made it difficult for many to play seniors every week. Brent has played a number of games in both the Seniors and Reserves over the last three years, including Premierships in ’06 & ’07 in the Reserves, taking his tally to 4.
Brent could have easily gone to another club or league, but he has been loyal to the club and his friends. Brent, now in his 30’s follows the recent footsteps of Robert Cavka, Dale Dickson, Greg Doyle and Shane Buckingham in reaching the 300 game milestone.
So what are his football plans beyond the ’08 season, “ I’m unsure at this stage what I’ll do next year, I’ll just wait and see”. Hoppers Crossing Football Club has been very fortunate to have a loyal player such as Splinter at their club. Lets hope the club and players repay him by making his day a special one this Saturday against Spotswood.
Well done Splint.
