The WRFL was awarded with the AFL Multicultural program Football League Award in a special presentation at AFL House.
AFL Multicultural Project Coordinator Nick Hatzoglou and Football Victoria CEO Ken Gannon acknowledged the work put in by the WRFL in multicultural communities which includes:
Working with the Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues and other community groups to develop programs to attract and retain players from multicultural backgrounds
Developing a highly successful introductory program with the AFL and the Western Bulldogs called FootyLinks. This program involved teaching football skills to people from multicultural backgrounds in the Braybrook/Sunshine area. This program was supported by the Sunshine Kangaroos Football Club
Continuing to conduct school clinics over 38 schools involving 5000 children to develop their football program, encourage physical activity and promote healthy eating options. The WRFL worked closely with the AFL Multicultural Schools program to promote this program.
