Two of the WRFL's first year Umpires received recognition for their efforts and dedication by being appointed to umpire in the Under 18's Grand Finals this year. These umpires Tim Carrington aged 23 and Tedros Belayneh aged 21, participated in the AFL Mentor Program which is specifically designed for first year umpires.
The AFL Mentor program provides new umpires to local Leagues with a dedicated mentor and an AFL starters kit which incorporated an AFL Sports Bag full with a complete AFL style green uniform, AFL sweatbands, a DVD, a drink bottle and even a whistle ! Plus more, what a great into to Umpiring.
"It is a credit to these two Umpires, their respective Mentors and the WRFL Umpire Coaches, that they have achieve a Grand Final in their first year. It also clearly demonstrates that the AFL Mentoring system is successful for those who want to actively participate." said Terry Gunn, Manager WRFL Umpiring Department.
"I should also highlight that Tedros commenced with the WRFL as part of a multicultural South African induction group. Tedros, formally from Ethiopia and has thoroughly enjoyed his umpiring and it shows. He is a fantastic runner and is so keen to listen and learn. He also likes the extra money as well." says Terry Gunn.
For any young person who would like to try Umpiring in 2009 just like Tim and Tedros, please keep an eye on the WRFL website www.wrfl.asn.au or ring the Head Office on 9315 1377.
