2010 AFL Victoria Volunteer of the Year Award
Len ‘Spud’ Murphy Spotswood Football Club
Name a role at the Spotswood Football Club since the 1960’s and you can bet either in an official capacity or unofficial ‘Spud” has filled it in some way. He is a former player having first pulled on the green and gold in 1961 as a 13 year old in the under 16’s.
He played in three under age premiership sides and went to Werribee in the VFA in 1968 but after a short stay returned to Spotswood to be part of the premiership side that year and also in 1971 and 1972.
He joined the Spotswood Committee in 1976 and his portfolio was looking after the senior players, a job he still does today to ensure the Spotswood Football Club is always strong.
After fire burnt down the rooms in 1987 Len was at the fore front of literally rebuilding the Club. He was responsible for many fundraising projects that still run today and continues to work tirelessly for the club he and his family love so much.
Len was a brilliant player and is a member of the Spotswood team of the Century.
Len and his wife Joan are absolute icons of the club and after 50m years involvement with the club deserve to be.
The AFL Victoria Award is befitting of a man and a family that has devoted itself to one of the proudest football club in Victoria. Good on you ‘Spud” this is well deserved.
