THE Western Region Football League (WRFL) grand finals could be held at Whitten Oval in 2011.
The league’s administration is set to move in to their new offices this week at the Bulldogs’ home base and has discussed the possibility of staging finals at the Barkly St ground next year.
Western Bulldogs CEO Campbell Rose said the relocation of the WRFL administration to Whitten Oval would help strengthen the relationship between the two organisations with the prospect of relocating the WRFL finals series just one of the possible benefits.
“This has been a while in coming and we are very pleased to have the Western Region Football League where we think it rightly belongs - at the Whitten Oval in partnership with us,” he said.
“(There is the possibility of) having finals on the oval. That is probably 18 months off but we should start planning now to have the finals on the oval in 18 months time and then turn that into a really big carnival for the whole of this region.
“A carnival that everyone from this region can be involved in, partake and make a bit of money out of.
“I think it is going to be a fantastic partnership for a long period of time.”
The WRFL grand finals are currently held at Chirnside Park every year with the division two games held a week before the division one.
The WRFL is vacating its current offices at Yarraville Oval due to renovations at the Williamstown Rd ground.
The Yarraville Oval offices will be converted into change rooms, umpire’s room, first aid room and storage areas when renovations begin next month.
WRFL president Bill Baarini said he was “really excited” by the prospect of relocating to the Bulldogs home in the coming weeks.
“It feels like we are nearly there. It’s a bit like a young kid looking for his birthday presents waiting for the birthday to arrive and we are not far from it.”
WRFL CEO Bob Tregear said the administration was under three weeks away from moving in.
