The BVJFA went to the Tathra Football oval this past Saturday, 4/6, for their weekly games. There were Under-6, Under-8 and Under-10 teams playing in addition to the Under-12's Development Game against the Tathra Sea Eagles under 13-teams.
As is typical of each week's gathering of junior football players from the Bega Valley, there were children from as far apart as Eden, Bermagui, Wolumla and Quaama present on Saturday morning to `have a kick'. One of the goals of the BVJFA is to ensure the long-term success of the Australian Football League in the Bega Valley; with kids playing from all over the shire, there will be plenty of kids to progress on to senior football clubs.
One parent commented that last year her 8-year-old son played other sports before, but he was never very enthusiastic about playing; now that he's playing in the modified-AFL games, and he's raring to `have a kick' each week. She also said that her son is participating in the Auskick program, and that she sees improvement in his football skills each week.
Kevin May, President of the Tathra Sea Eagles, thanked the BVJFA Saturday morning for coming to Tathra to play; he also said that seeing the number of kids playing footy on Saturday morning is very encouraging for the future of football clubs across the shire and the BVJFA was a great concept. Dean Carroll, also of Tathra Football Club, commented to Graham Mitchell, President of the BVJFA that he had looked through the crowd and saw many new faces there Saturday morning.
A Development Game was held between the BVJFA Under-12's and the Tathra Sea Eagles' Under-13 team. The Sea Eagles team are second on the ladder, and the BVJFA team was challenged by them to use the skills that they practice each week, the Bega Valley Roo's again showed great sportsmanship and ability making all parents and officials beam with pride. It was great for the Bega Valley Roo's to see highly skilled players such as Mitchell May who has been selected for the state primary school team demonstrate his ability as there is no better way to learn than from example. Tathra Football Club made BVJFA very welcome and gave a great demonstration of what good teams and clubs can do, thanks very much to Kevin May and Tathra Football Club for their hospitality.
