Match One: Gunnedah Bulldogs v New England Nomads at Wolseley Oval
There is only the one clash this weekend in the TAFL, but it is a game that had some huge ramifiations for both clubs. They met two two weeks ago at this very venue, but follwing the last-minute change to the draw in pre-season, these clubs were forced to change their original plans and grounds. It all led to the Nomads making the trip west to face the Bulldogs, and certainly the boys from Armidale will be keen to change the result from 14 days ago. On that occasion, they arrived to the ground late, and it showed early as they were blown off the park by a focussed Dogs outift. Despite battling bakc late, they gave up too much of a start and could never recover. Their loss last week was the opposite, with them being in the game for the first half, before being blown off the park in the third quarter. They will be keen to get back in the winners circle here, and will be very keen to get over this long series of road games, which will come to an end in a couple of weeks time. A win here is crucial for them to stay in the hunt for top spot but they must find that early season form this week. The Bulldogs looked to be heading in the right direction following that win a fortnight ago, but without some of their stars last week they struggled to match the Roos in Tamworth. In order for them to win this clash, they must have all hands on deck here and play the best team footy they can. Their midfield has received a healthy boost mid season with the arrival back in town of Scott Hardy, and when they get some support up front they are potent in attack. But the key to this clash could be at the Bulldogs defensive end. The likes of Shane Murphy, John Woolsaton and Paul Bushby will need to be on guard to stop Simon Stubbs, Weston Whitby and Dave Richards and if they can, half the battle is won.
Alot will depend on the 18 that both teams put on the field. At their best, the Nomads are very hard to stop, but they are slightly down on where they were 2 months ago. If the Dogs can catch them napping, another win is on the cards.
TAFL Tipster - The Dogs will snare another upset, this time by 5 points.
Post Script - The TAFL Tipster would like to extend his sympathies to the Fridge as he works through a tough time with his family. All the best big fella, and we all look forward to seeing your previews back soon!
