The Inverell Saints played themselves into a sixth consecutive Grand Final this season, a record in the Tamworth AFL. They will be chasing their third flag on Saturday in what is a remarkable achievement for a club in just their eighth season.
They started the season under a new coach in Jason Gobbert, and were coming off a Grand Final loss in Tamworth to the Roos. They started the season off on fire, winning their first four games by an average margin of 95 points. Their first speed bump was running into the Nomads in Armidale and suffering a four-point loss, followed by another loss in Tamworth to the Roos. They got themselves back on track with home wins over the Dogs and Cats and an away win against the Swans, before they dismantled the Nomads by 95 points at home to take back top spot on the ladder. However, that effort was backed up with their only home loss of the season to the Roos and then a lacklustre effort in Narrabri against the Dogs where they had to rally from 6 goals down to get the win. Another trip to Armidale in Round 16 saw another loss and had them back to third spot and in danger of missing the Major Semi, before a good win in Tamworth against the Cats got them back into second and a double chance in the finals. That lead them to the Major Semi, where they led at every change to record a gritty 20 point win and book their fourth home Grand Final.
