Inverell Saints player Jono Elphick went to the Essential Energy Tamworth AFL Tribunal on Thursday 9th July to face two charges arising from the game against the Kangaroos at Varley Oval on the Saturday 4th July.
The first charge, under law 19.2.2(e) disputing a decision of an Umpire, stemmed from the third quarter and related to comments alleged to have been made after the awarding of a free kick against the reported player. The prescribed penalty for reports under rule 19.2.2(e) is one (1) match suspension. The minimum suspension at tribunal if found guilty is two (2) matches.
The second charge, under law 19.2.2(d) behaving in an abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene manner towards or in relation to an Umpire, stemmed from an alleged incident after the match. The prescribed penalty for reports under rule 19.2.2(d) is a two (2) match suspension. The minimum suspension at tribunal if found guilty is three (3) matches.
Elphick was offered the three (3) match suspensions in line with the EETAFL prescribed penalty system. Elphick chose to challenge the charges at the tribunal and was found guilty of the first charge, law 19.2.2(e) and duly suspended for two (2) matches. However he was found not guilty of the second charge, law 19.2.2(d).
In summary Elphick will miss round 6 against the Eagles in Narrabri and round 7 against the Bulldogs in Inverell and is ineligible to win the 2011 Tony Gillies Medal.
