New England Nomads v Inverell Saints at Bellevue Oval - 2pm Saturday
The TAFL has not had to wait long for a Grand Final replay in 2013, with the 2012 Premier Nomads up against the Runners Up from last season the Saints. Just 6 months ago, these two teams played out a memorable Grand Final at Varley Oval with the Nomads winning a see-sawing affair by 4 goals and claimed their first flag in almost 10 years. The Saints were again the bridesmaids, but proved their class with a sixth consecutive Grand Final appearance.
Both teams have started 2013 with big wins last week in Tamworth. The Nomads were ruthless in putting away the Swans. They didn’t concede a single point in the second half and it is a scary thought for opposition clubs as they were well under strength for the clash. They will hope to welcome back a few experienced heads into the team for this clash and could be very hard to beat on the vast expanse of Bellevue in 2013.
The Saints were also impressive last weekend, and their second half, whilst not as intimidating as the Nomads, was clinical as well. They put the Cats away with some good run and carry out of defence and an imposing display from stand in captain Mike Gould up front. They were also understrength that only adds to the intrigue of this match up.
The recent history of these clubs does not paint a pretty picture for the Nomads. With the exception of last season, they had beaten the Saints only once in the previous 5 seasons. However, they turned the tables last season, winning the season series 3-2, the last of which being a Premiership win. Despite their lack of foot speed in comparison to the Nomads, the Saints are not daunted by a trip to Armidale. They won the Major Semi there last year, and also knocked the Nomads off in 2011 in the Prelim.
The match up across the field is very even, with the match possibly decided in the midfield. Each side has their share of match winning forwards and hard nosed defenders, but the midfield supply could determine which club makes the most of their opportunities. Last year’s Nuttal Medallist Dave Graan started his year in impressive fashion last week and will be a major force in the Nomads midfield this week. The Saints have unearthed a new star in Hayden Chappel and it will be a tantalising proposition to watch these two players go head to head on Saturday.
The Nomads surprised many with the ease of their victory last weekend, and this tipster simply can’t tip against them on the basis of last week’s effort.
