In our first game was against the unknown South Coast AFL we were slow out of the blocks allowing them to have 3-7-25 to 0-0-0 half time score. In the second half of this game we caught up with the tempo of football that is the next level above club football. In this game we also saw Evan Griffiths kick his first goal. Final score South Coast AFL 6-10-46 d TAFL 3-1-19
TAFL Goal Kickers: Johnathon Frost 1, Mick Viney 1, Evan Griffiths 1
TAFL Best: Joe Kimmince, Jono Elphick, Glen Northway, Johnathon Frost, Darren Pithers, Anthony Reid
Next we played against Central West AFL, and after watching them playing the game before, we thought we could win this one. We burst away in the first half with a quick goal and a number of behinds before slotting through another goal and all the while holding the Central West scoreless. Late in the first half however, we let them back in with 2 quick goals to go in at half time: TAFL 2-5-17, Central West 2-0-12. The second half again saw TAFL kick away early and we were looking good but then Central West came to life and ran over us in the last 10 minutes to win. Central West AFL 7-5-47 d TAFL 5-6-36
TAFL Goal Kickers: Alex Walker 2, Johnathon Frost 1, Alex Dasey 1, Stewart Walker 1
TAFL Best: Jono Elphick, Mick Corley, Glen Northway, Anthony Reid, Darren Pithers, Johnathon Frost
The last game saw a tired TAFL team come up against the Northern Riverina Football League. With Mick Viney and Josh McKenzie sitting this game out due to injuries the TAFL were always going to struggle. The NRFL kicked the first 2 goals before the TAFL bounced back with a goal to the Nomad’s goal kicking ace Weston Whitby. Unfortunately that was the only goal the TAFL could muster for the game. Final score NRFL 9-7-61 d TAFL 1-1-7.
Jon Elphick from the Inverell Saints was named the TAFL’s best player of the championships and was awarded his trophy at a function at the Rules club on Saturday night.
Sunday sees us play off against the Central West AFL in our final game of the championships.
