Round 21

League Women - Eagles v Palmerston Power (Thursday)

Overtime win to the Eagles! In an exciting see-sawing game between the Eagles and Palmerston the Birds surged home in overtime to edge out the Power 87-85. The Power had built up a 41-35 half time lead, but that was cut to a single digit at three quarter time by a resurgent Eagle mob 57-56. The last quarter saw the scoreboard ticking over quite madly as both sides tried to get the upper hand. Ieasha Friel (19.9ppg) from the Birds ignited the Eagles with a scoring display reminiscent of last season’s record breaking effort. With the Birds trailing 63-70 with 5:46 remaining Friel took over scoring the next 13 points to level the scores at 76 apiece with a three pointer! Regulation ended at 76 all. Overtime had a number of lead changes, but in the end the Birds won it from the free throw line with 4 freebies in the last 1:31 to take out the match. Friel led all scorers with 38 (including 7 treys), Tulaha Jeffrey hit 17 and Jaylene Boundry & Michelle Friel 10 each. Brittany Ward (16.8ppg) led the Power with 23, Sue Bastick 16, Mikaella Desamito 15, Chiara Jones 12 and Louise Turner 10.

Razzle Storm v Uni Rebels (Friday)

The Uni Rebels finished off the season with a rare win by beating the Razzle Storm 63-61 in a real nail-biter. The Rebels had built up a seemingly winning 41-32 margin at the end of three quarters, but the Storm blew back into the game with a 29-22 fourth quarter run that almost won the day. The Rebels however, held back the Storm by getting to the charity stripe enough to offset the scoring by the Storm as time wound down. Shavayah Lee (10.9ppg) hit a team high 17 for the Rebels with Toya Norris on 13 and Chantelle Lee & Danielle Ponter on 10 apiece. Erin Boyd (17ppg) from the Razzle Storm led all scorers with 18 while Lailani Triffit & Mali Gordon had 10 each.

Lightning v Ansett (Friday)

A big last quarter run saw Ansett shake off a pesky Lightning outfit for a 71-51 win. The Blues had a seven point 48-41 lead at the end of three quarters, but put it all on the line in the last quarter with a 23-10 run to take the match. The league’s leading scorer, Tal Yakov (28.7ppg), hit 16 of her game high 39 points in the last quarter to lead the Blues to the win. Backing up Yakov was Carolyn Nyhouse with 11. Dominique Carbone (17ppg) led the Lightning with 23 with Kahlee Stanislaus on 11. Despite the loss the Lightning did make the playoffs and will match up with the Eagles next week.

Ladder:                                  Tracy Village Jets 16-2, Ansett 14-4, Eagles 11-7, Lightning & Palmerston Power 7-11, Razzle Storm 5-13 & Uni Rebels 3-15

Next week Semi-finals:     Thursday – Eagles v Lightning 6:30pm & Tracy Village Jets v Ansett 8:00pm

Men

Round 21

League Men – Essington Cannons v Tracy Village Jets (Thursday)

Essington Cannons toyed with the Tracy Village Jets for a quarter then unloaded on them for a big 134-80 victory. The Jets had gone toe to toe with the Cannons for a quarter, trailing by only one point at 25-24, but the second quarter was all Cannons as they hit 34 points to just 14 and took control of the game. By half time it was 59-38 and at the end of three quarters it was 99-57. Tobiasz Hose hit 29 for the Cannons, Deba George & Deola D’Brown Folarin 24 each, Fisto Bizima 22 and Emanuel Siriotis a season high 16. For the Jets Joel Stevens had a team high 21, Liam Maclachlan hit 17, Jason O’Donoghue 14, Sean Goggin 12 and Ned Stevens 10.

Eagles v Palmerston Power (Thursday)

In a hotly contested match-up between the Eagles and Palmerston the Power prevailed with a late fourth quarter rally for a 95-89 win. The victory for the Power didn’t change the standings as they will still meet the Eagles again next week in the minor semi-final. There was never more than a 10 point gap by either team during the encounter, but late in the last quarter with the Eagles ahead 86-83 Ben Streeter from the Power nailed a three-pointer to tie the game up at 86 all with 2:21 to go. A couple of lead changes and with 1:17 left Tom Godwin hit a trey to put the Power up for good at 91-88. The Birds got no closer than two points before the Power closed out the game from the free throw line. The replay between these two sides next week should provide a very exciting knock-out semi with the loser out and winner to the Preliminary Final. Garrett Hall hit a game high 36 for the winners (including 6 treys), Streeter finished with 21 (also 6 treys) and Willie Shackelford added 19. Anthony Golden hit 33 for the Birds with Jordan Sing on 17, James Smith 15 and Steven Sing 14.

Lightning v Ansett (Friday)

New DBA records were set in this 135-85 win by Ansett over the Lightning. Jerron Jamerson continues to amaze and he showed his determination in this one. Jamerson hit a season high 60 and in the process broke a points scoring record that has stood since 1986. Jamerson’s season tally of 736 broke the record of 686 set by Jeff Larson who was with the Uni Rebels back in 86’. Jamerson also set a new DBA record for average points per game with 40.89 and most free throws made in a season with 164. Not only this, but the teams combined to set a new DBA record of most three-pointers in a game with 35…22 by the Blues who tied the Eagles who set the record for most by a team back in October. The Blues jumped the Lightning 34-19 in the first quarter and by half time led 63-41. Lightning couldn’t mount a challenge and fell further behind 100-57 at the end of three…end of game basically. Backing up Jamerson were Mitch O’Donoghue 24, James Toohey 22 and Robert Skinner 11. For Lightning Brodie Hertel hit 24, Dylan De Santis 21 (all treys!), Chris Charman 17 and Jacob Ross 10.

Razzle Storm v Uni Rebels (Friday)

The minor premier Uni Rebels wrapped up their regulation season with an easy 113-94 win over the Razzle Storm who must rank as one of the highest scoring losing teams in DBA history. The Storm can score, but just not enough to put the ‘w’ in the column. The Rebels wasted no time taking charge in this one, leading 30-11 after a quarter and up by 25 at half time 58-33. Spencer Coleman hit a season and game high 41 for the Rebels with Tim Morris on 33, Jake Kirby 19 and Jamie Hamill 12. Fred Williams led the Storm with 37, Nathan Radonich 19, Connor Mccabe 15 and Nick Routledge 12.

Ladder:                                  Uni Rebels 18-3, Essington Cannons 16-5, Eagles & Palmerston Power 14-7, Ansett 12-9, Lightning 5-15, Razzle Storm 3-17 & Tracy Village Jets 1-20

Next week Semi-finals:          Thursday – Uni Rebels v Essington Cannons 6:30pm & Eagles v Palmerston Power 8:00pm
