Women

Eagles put aside a poor percentage shooting night to notch up win number three this season as they outlasted a committed Lightning outfit 46-36.  Michelle Friel (15) got the Eagles off to a quick start with a two pointer just seconds into the game and then the birds racked up 8 more for a 10-2 first quarter lead.  The signs were ominous for Lightning, but true to their nature they stormed back through the efforts of Lauren Sealy (11) and Tamara Sheppard (12) to reverse the score lines in the second quarter to trail by only one 11-12 at the half. The second half was a defensive battle royal as the Eagles failed to shake off the tenacious Lightning until minutes into the last quarter when Greta Hollis nailed a three pointer that seemed to lift the Eagles as they powered their way to a 17-11 run behind Trish Graham (11) and Friel to wrap up the win.

The Tracy Village Jets and Warriors played a game of two very different halves with the Jets coming out on top 42-29.  Desiree Weetra led the Jets on a 19-9 first quarter rampage as she and Shannyn Ah Sam (9) combined for 11 points that put the Warriors squarely on the back foot.  However, the Warriors turned things around behind the skills of point guard Rebecca Hall as they put together a 15-5 run that knotted the score up at 24 all at the half.  The second half wasn’t anything like the first as the Jets scored a total of 18 to the Warriors 5 to run out winners.  The Jets held the Warriors to a lone three pointer from Donna Peters in the third quarter and a single basket from Peta Bailey (14) in the last.  The lid on the basket was pretty much in place for the Warriors during the last 16 minutes of the game.

Ansett had to pull out the stops to first overhaul an 8-11 first quarter deficit and then secondly hold off a determined Razzle team as they won their second game in a row 59-47.  Lucy Adam hit 8 of her game high 22 in the first quarter for the Razzle, finding her three point shooting range early testing Ansetts defence and throwing out the challenge to keep the Razzle from scoring.  Ansett met part of the challenge and rammed home 22-13 in the second quarter when Stacy McKenzie (10), Kate Hoschke and Olivia Birkett (15 each) lit up the scoreboard during their fight back, giving Ansett a 30-24 half time advantage.  The third quarter was level pegging with both teams hitting 11 points as Ansett maintained its slim 6pt lead despite the points Adams continued to drop in.  In the last quarter Ansett lifted their work rate again as Birkett, Hoschke and McKenzie took the ball to the hoop and were rewarded for their attacking style as the Blues put in a 18-12 run that finished off the Razzle.

Men

The first meeting of the season between the Tracy Village Jets and the Warriors was an all Jet affair as they won both halves comprehensively for a final score line of 85-47.  Travis Ellis and Alex Weetra led four players in double figures with 25 and 17 points respectively as they carved up the Warrior defence with an array of three pointers and some pinpoint passing. A 28-6 second quarter burst from the Jets put the game beyond doubt as the Warriors failed to match it with the up tempo Jets.  Ryan Marshall and Liam MacLachlan lent support for the Jets with 12 and ll while John Culbertson tallied 16 for the Warriors.

The Eagles grabbed a share of second place on the ladder after a 75-53 win against Lightning.  The early season matchup pitted the two adversaries in what usually ends up being a nail biting outcome.  This time the Eagles came out firing behind centre Lucas Tanis who had a game high 26 to go along with his double figure rebound count.  A dominant display on the boards gave the Eagles plenty of possession and helped to shut down the extra shots Lightning normally get through their athletic ability in ‘crashing the boards’, especially on at the offensive end of the court.  Apart from a second quarter lapse when Lightning out scored the Eagles 13-11, the Eagles got on with the job and steadily pulled away for the win.  Mark Lloyd finished with a team high 17 for Lightning.

Ansett picked up win number two at the expense of Razzle, whom they beat 65-43.  Earl Nurse and Matt Hunt combined for 26 points to lead Ansett into sole possession of fourth place on the ladder, two games clear of the Warriors.  Nurse showed he has some springs in his legs with a thunderous dunk from a standing start under the hoop in the third quarter as Ansett continued to pile on the points as four players ended up in double figures.  Jay Edwards was the best of Razzle with 16 and if it wasn’t for a poor showing in the first quarter when Ansett outscored the Razzle 20-8 things might have turned out differently.
