Round 16

League Women - Ansett v Eagles (Thursday)

Overtime!! The Eagles and Ansett played out a real nail biter on Thursday with the Birds winning out in overtime 78-75 to edge one game closer to the coveted second chance spot on the ladder which is still occupied by Ansett despite their loss. Not much more than eight points separated the teams throughout the game and getting close to the end of regulation it looked like the Blues were going to claim the win after a trey by Clancy Dorman put the Blues up 63-61 with just 37 seconds left to play. The Birds called a timeout and on the ensuing play Alysha-Marie Williams hit a bucket to tie the game up and send it into overtime. The OT was a see-saw affair with the Eagles again surging at the end for the win. Eagle Tulaha Jeffrey hit a trey with 1:52 left to give the Eagles a 75-70 lead, but soon after Ruta Valiulyte hit a bucket followed by a trey from Tal Yakov at 59 seconds to tie it up at 75 all! Eagle Michelle Friel was fouled with 52 seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws and after the Blues failed to score on their possession Lillian Williams hit a basket for the final scoreline. Four Eagles hit double figures with Jeffrey leading the way on 20, Ieasha Friel (20.8ppg) 18, Williams 16 and Michelle Friel 10. Tal Yakov (27ppg) led all scorers with 31 for the Blues (including 6 treys), Valiulyte finished with 15 and Dorman 12.

The Rebels jumped out to a 25-13 first quarter lead and kept up the pressure throughout as they won their fourteenth game of the season. Williams hit 17 of his game high 29 in the quarter and the Storm never let up on their way to the win. Support came from James Rudolph with 21 and Chris Mahlstedt (12.7ppg) with 16.
