Round 7

League Women - Razzle Storm v Uni Rebels

The Razzle Storm lifted themselves off of the bottom of the ladder with a 56-38 win over cellar dwellers Uni Rebels. Both sides were languishing at the bottom, but the Storm rode on the back of Erin Boyd and Lailani Triffitt who combined for 44 of the Storms points. The Uni Rebels actually held a 11-10 first quarter lead before the Storm gained momentum in the second quarter to rumble past them with a 19-6 run for a 29-17 half time lead. The second half belonged to the Storm (27pts to 21) despite the efforts of the Rebels to get back within striking distance. Boyd finished with 27 and Triffitt 17. Danielle Ponter led the Rebels with 16.

Lightning v Ansett

Ansett and Lightning were locked into a closely fought match for the first half of their game before the Blues broke free in the second half for a 58-40 win. The Blues jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game, but lost it all when the Lightning went on a 11-0 run to only trail by two points after a quarter 13-11. The second quarter was basket for basket with the Blues leading 25-21 at the break. The third quarter was the turning point as the Blues hit a purple patch for an 18-9 run giving them a 43-30 lead with a quarter to go and they didn’t let up finishing off the game with a 15-10 run for the win. The league’s leading scorer Tal Yakov (25.6ppg) didn’t disappoint as she hit a game high 25 with Tamiyah Perkins netting 15 and Ruta Valiulyte 8. Peta Bailey hit a season high of 15 for the Lightning.

Eagles v Palmerston Power

The Eagles overcame the Palmerston Power 74-59, but it took three quarters of the game for them to finally shake off the tenacious Power. The Power had all of the early running in the game leading 19-12 after one quarter and by 25-23 at the half. The Eagles didn’t get their nose in front until about a minute and a half into the third quarter and then the teams traded baskets until late in the last quarter. Leading 63-57 after the Power’s Brittany Ward (22.2ppg) hit a trey the Birds called a time out with 1:58 remaining. The timeout proved timely as they racked up 11 unanswered points in a minute and a half to blow the game wide open for the win. Ieasha Friel (24.5ppg) led all scorers with 26 for the Eagles, Jaylene Boundry (9.5ppg) hit a season high 20 (including 6 treys), Alysha-Marie Williams 12 and Lillian Williams 10. The Power’s Ward (leads the league with 22 treys) finished with 21 (including 6 treys) and Louise Turner (14.3ppg) had a season high 19.

Round 8

Uni Rebels v Eagles

The Eagles flew rings around the Uni Rebels as they swooped away to a 96-57 win to keep a solid grip on second place on the ladder. The Birds sailed away to a 27-15 first quarter lead and repeated more of the same during a 26-11 second quarter run for a commanding 53-26 half time lead. The Rebels failed to make much headway in the second half as the Eagles continued to beat their way forward to victory. Five Eagles hit double figures with Ieasha Friel leading the way with a game high 32. Edith Boundry 17, Alysha-Marie Williams 13 and Jaylene Boundry & Michelle Friel 10 apiece. Shavayah Lee led the Rebels with 15 and Tiayana Siung added 13.

Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Kylie Duggan hit a season high 22 to lead the Tracy Village Jets to an easy 77-49 win against the Lightning. The Jets led 20-10 after one quarter and added a point to that buffer by half time 32-21 after the Lightning put up a tougher effort in the second quarter. After a dismal third quarter effort (only 8pts) the Lightning found themselves left in the lurch trailing 58-29 heading into the last quarter. The Jets won out in the end despite a spirited revival by the Lightning who won the last quarter 20-19. Duggan was supported by Tikesa Docherty-Cole with 16 and Erin Geer 11. Kira Pendlebury hit 11 and Samantha Wilson 10 for the Lightning.

Ansett v Palmerston Power

Ansett held off the Palmerston Power for a hard fought 63-53 victory to remain the only undefeated team (7-0) in League play this season, men or women. A quick start 14-8 first quarter run put the Blues in the driver’s seat early and they stayed firmly ensconced in that position for the rest of the game. By half time it was 32-21 and that buffer remained for the rest of the second half. Tal Yakov led the Blues with 22, Carolyn Nyhouse hit 13 and Tamiyah Perkins 11 while Brittany Ward from the Power hit a game high 24 with Louise Turner on 12.

   Round 7

League Men – Lightning v Ansett (Thursday)

Ansett were lucky to get away with a 99-97 win over the Lightning who almost stole the show with a big fightback in the last quarter. The Blues seemed to be cruising along to another big win when the Lightning lit up the scoreboard in the last quarter during a 30-17 run that fell just short with only seconds left. The Blues were up 82-67 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Dylan De Santis, Christian Williams and Austin Kisselev threw out the challenge as they peppered the net to ignite a 12-6 run that put the Blues on the back foot. Lightning kept up the pressure and were in with a chance when Kisselev (30.5ppg) hit a free throw to tie the game up at 93 all with about 1:30 left to play. Robert Skinner (19.1ppg) from the Blues immediately hit a trey for a 96-93 lead followed by a pair of free throws from Jerron Jamerson for a 98-93 advantage with just seconds remaining. Craig Martin (14.7ppg) from Lightning hit a free throw and a trey to get within 1 point at 98-97 but time ran out as Ansett’s Joseph Stewart hit a free throw for the final score. Jamerson (35.8ppg) had another big game with 46, Skinner hit 16 and Brad Davis 12. Kisselev finished with 34, Chris Charman 18 (6 treys), Martin 16 and De Santis 15 (5 treys).

Essington Cannons v Razzle Storm (Thursday-Rd 8)

The Razzle Storm was no match for a fired up Essington Cannons outfit who ran roughshod over the Storm to win easy 103-70. Five Cannons figured in double figures with Deola D’Brown Folarin (17.6ppg) leading the pack with 23, Travis Ellis 20, newcomer Tobiasz Hose 19, Lachlan Shipway 17 and Jake Eyles 11. The Storm stayed in touch in the first quarter, trailing by only 3 at 21-18, but the Cannons rolled over them in the second quarter 30-15 for a 51-33 half time lead and never looked back. Fred Williams (27.5ppg) top scored for the Storm and the game with 31, Connor McCabe & Nathan Radonich hit 13 each and James Rudolph had 10.

Eagles v Palmerston Power (Friday)

The Eagles overhauled the Palmerston Power in the second half to win going away 103-86. Trailing 45-44 at the major break the Birds put it all together in the third quarter to outscore the Power 30-21 to take a 74-66 lead heading into the last frame. With Anthony Golden (29.8ppg) returned from overseas the Birds added a bona fide scorer to the lineup to go with Jordan Sing, Zac Williams-Hook and JJ Johnson. The Eagles outscored the Power 59-41 in the second half. Golden led all scorers for the game with 31, Sing (21ppg) added 29 and Johnson & Williams-Hook hit 15 each. Willie Shackleford (21ppg) put up 29 for the Power with Garrett Hall (20ppg) on 27 and Aaron Simpson & Ben Street 12 apiece.

Razzle Storm v Uni Rebels (Friday)

Spencer Coleman, Jarrod Sheppard & Tim Morris combined for 61 points (more than the Razzle team) as they led the Uni Rebels to an 84-56 victory that keeps them locked into a tie with the Eagles for top spot on the Ladder. The Rebels started out on a positive note in the first quarter, taking an 18-9 lead and then building that up to 39-24 at the half. Fred Williams (26.8ppg) and Chris Mahlstedt (13.7ppg) did their best to keep the Storm in the game, but there just wasn’t enough support. Coleman (24.7ppg) ended up with 26, Sheppard 20 and Morris (28.4ppg) 15 while Williams led the Storm with 22 and Mahlstedt finished with 15.

Essington Cannons v Tracy Village Jets (Friday-Rd7)

After a slow start to the game the Essington Cannons rolled over the Tracy Village Jets 93-69 for their fourth win of the competition. The Jets actually led after one quarter 9-7 before the Cannons loaded up and ignited behind the shooting of Tobiasz Hose (25.5ppg) and Travis Ellis (20.3ppg) with a 25-12 run in the second quarter to take the lead 32-21 at half time and never looked back. Hose finished up with a game high 32, Ellis 22 and Deola D’Brown Folarin 18 while Joel Stevens (13.2ppg) led the Jets with 20, Jason O’Donoghue 17 and Jackson Tremlett 8.

Round 8

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning (Saturday)

Lightning overpowered the Tracy Village Jets with a dominant 106-48 win that keeps them within striking distance of a playoff spot. It is still early days yet, but they can’t afford to let the top five teams get away from them. A disastrous first quarter by the Jets had them well off the pace as the Lightning bolted out to a 28-3 lead. By half time it was 52-17…game over basically. Five Lightning players hit the double with Austin Kisselev at the front with 33, Craig Martin 20, Dylan De Santis 18 (6 treys), Brodie Hertel 17 and Jesse Bell 10. Jackson Tremlett was the lone Jet in double figures with 10.

Eagles v Uni Rebels (Saturday)

The battle of the top two teams was taken out by the Uni Rebels who knocked off the Eagles 105-80. The twenty-five point victory was a bit of a surprise, but Tim Morris and Spencer Coleman hit season highs to lead the way. Morris hit 37 and Coleman 35 with Jarrod Sheppard adding 21 for a combined total of more than the Eagles team. The Eagles (like the Jets above) had a terrible start to the game scoring only 6 points to 22 by the Rebels in the first quarter and they never looked like getting back into contention. Anthony Golden led the Birds with 28, Zach Williams-Hook hit 16, Jordan Sing 13 and Joseph Johnson 12.

Ansett v Palmerston Power (Saturday)

Willie Shackleford & Garrett Hall teamed up with 67 points between them to help the Palmerston Power upset Ansett 95-91. The Blues held the advantage in the first half leading by six points 48-42 at the break, but the Power surged back in the third quarter during a 26-14 run to take a 68-62 lead heading into the fourth quarter. They managed to hold on despite the efforts of Jerron Jamerson and Robert Skinner in the end game. The win gave the Power a share of third place on the ladder with the Blues.
