Round 11

League Women -  Uni Rebels v Eagles

The Eagles won a nail-biting thriller against the Uni Rebels on Thursday night, winning 71-69 thanks to a two-pointer by Michelle Friel (12.3ppg) with only 19 seconds left in the contest. The Birds had built up what looked like a game winning 13-point advantage after an explosive 32 points in the third quarter gave them the lead. They had trailed 35-26 at halftime. Ieasha Friel (27.8ppg) led the third quarter attack with 14 of her game high 32 points while the Birds clamped down on the Rebels defensively, holding them to just 10 for the quarter. But in the last quarter the Rebels charged forward hitting 8pts to 2 in the first three and a half minutes as they began to chip away at the Eagle lead. By the 5:19 mark the Rebels were down by 11 at 66-55 and they then grabbed the momentum through Jasmyn Hewett and Tiayana Sing who almost got the Rebels over the line. Jaylene Bonson (15.3ppg) hit a basket with 48 seconds left to get the Rebels within 2 at 69-67 and Sing hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left to tie it up at 69 all before Michelle Friel quickly replied with the game winning basket. Faye Armstrong helped out with 13 for the Birds and M. Friel finished with 11. Hewett (12ppg) led the Rebels with 19, Danielle Ponter (12ppg) had 16 and Sing finished with 11.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Erin Geer hit a season high 21 points as she led the Tracy Village Jets to a convincing 78-50 victory against the winless Lightning. The Jets set about the business of winning with a dominant 21-7 first quarter and then cruised away for their 9th win of the season. Geer (10.5ppg) had support from Tikesa Docherty-Cole with 17 and Kylie Duggan 12. Dominique Carbone (13.7ppg) continued to fill the net with a team high 19 for the Lightning. Kira Pendlebury added 16.

Ansett v Razzle Storm

Ansett took to the air against the Razzle Storm leaving them grounded as the Blues inched within one game of a playoff spot by dumping the Storm 78-28. With 5 games remaining in the regular season the Blues are still in contention. Carolyn Nyhouse was one of four Blues players to reach double figures, notching up a game high 19 with Ruta Valiuyte adding 16, Amelia Short 15 and Alison Fleming 13. The Blues were off and flying with a dominant 20-6 first quarter effort and they kept up that pace for the remainder of the game. Lailani Triffitt was the only Storm player to hit double figures with 11.

Men

League Men – Ansett v HPP

Ansett hung on by its teeth to claim a hard fought 83-79 win over the HPP. Jerron Jamerson (35.2ppg) led the Blues with 30 points, but they again had to battle it out right to the finish or the fast finishing HPP would have overhauled them. These two teams seem to play out very close encounters…the last time they met the Blues won 80-79. With numerous lead changes throughout the second half the result was always in doubt. With 4:59 remaining HPP’s Joel Stevens nailed a three pointer to tie the game up at 73all, but that was the last time HPP was close to a win, although a three pointer by Jordan Sing with 20 seconds left got them with two at 81-79. However, Matthew Barrett hit a two pointer with just 8secs left to seal it for the Blues. Backing up Jamerson were Brad Davis (14.2ppg) on 15 and Barrett on 14. Sing led the HPP with 24, Fisto Bizima 19 @ 14.8ppg, Steven Sing 13 @ 9.8ppg and Jackson Tremlett 11.

Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

The league leading Eagles maintained their unbeaten streak with a 75-60 victory over the Tracy Village Jets. The Birds took a 21-10 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back as they cruised to their 10 straight win. Anthony Golden (31.7ppg) & Jesse Williams-Hook (12.2ppg) shared scoring honours for the Birds with 19 apiece and Jordan Sing added 9. For the Jets Jackson Tremlett (10.1ppg) hit a season high 16 and Liam Maclachlan 11. Alex Weetra & Donte Ah Sam had 9 each.

Lightning v Palmerston Power

In a hotly contested match-up between the Lightning & Palmerston Power the Power stayed on while the Lightning was defused. The Power won the game 84-75, but they had to stage a second half revival to do so. Fisto Bizima (20.5ppg) was the ‘go to’ man on the night for the Power as he led from the front with 28 points, his second highest output of the season. He hit 5 treys, 9FT’s and a couple of two-pointers in his haul while getting support from Ben Streeter (18), Jesse Bell (12) and Jai Weetra (10). Lightning had started the game confidently and led at half time 35-33, but after the break the Power slowly edged away with a 22-17 run in the third quarter followed up by a 29-23 run to wrap it up. Lightning’s Austin Kisselev (25.2ppg) top scored for the game with 37, Tony Halikos chipped in with 12 and Chris Charman had 11.

Razzle Storm v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels didn’t hold back in their encounter with the Razzle Storm, thumping the Storm 90-44 to take a firmer grip on third place on the ladder. The Storm had no answer for the Rebel offensive onslaught. By half time the score was 54-15 with Tim Morris leading the way for the Rebels. Morris (28 @ 32.4ppg) got plenty of help along the way with Spencer Coleman (24.6ppg) hitting 18 and Travis Ellis 17. The Storm didn’t have a chance and with the addition of Travis Ellis to the Rebels offensive thrust the rest of the league may be put to the test come playoff time. Ellis has moved from the Tracy Village Jets camp and will continue to pursue a milestone that is within his grasp…that is to be the first player in DBA history to score 10,000pts. He is only 8pts shy. Brendan Dell (19ppg) shone for the Storm, but he was the only bright light for them with 21 points. A huge match-up next week for the Rebels as they take on the league leading Eagles!
