Round 9

League Women -  Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

A determined Tracy Village Jets outfit knocked off the league leading Eagles 71-41 to lift them into a tie with the Birds at the top of the ladder. A full team of Jets fronted up for this clash with the Eagles including a return to the court of Sam Rioli who suited up for the first time this season. The Jets held all the Eagles to under double figures except Ieasha Friel (27.3ppg) who netted 18 for the Birds. The defense played a big part in the win for the Jets as they scooted out to a 35-23 half time lead and did much the same in the second half. Erin Geer (9ppg) led the Jets with a team high 16 followed by Kylie Duggan (13.2ppg) with 13 and Delsey Ah Wang on 10.

Lightning v Razzle Storm

The Razzle Storm razzled and dazzled the Lightning in the last quarter to break open a close game to win easy 56-39. Lightning looked poised to win their first game of the season with 8:49 left in the game and a 34-30 lead. They had led for most of the game and then hit a concrete wall. For the next 5 minutes the Storm blew past the Lightning on a 16-0 run that ended any chance of the Lightning had of claiming that win. Erin Boyd (13.2ppg) spearheaded that run as the Storm notched up their fourth win of the competition. Boyd ended up with a game high 15, Laura Triffitt added 10 and Jo Farmer 9. Dominique Carbone (13.1ppg) & Kira Pendlebury shared scoring honours for the Lightning with 11 apiece.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels hung on against a fast finishing Ansett to rack up their fifth win of the season 68-61. The win keeps them in third place on the ladder. The Rebels had momentum for all of the first half taking a 45-31 lead and looking comfortable, but it all changed after the break. Ansett came out much more determined in the third quarter and stayed with the Rebels, but still trailed by 15 with a quarter to go. With 7 minutes left in the game Tamiyah Perkins (11.2ppg) led the Blues on a run that got them within 3 points at 63-60 after a basket by Kate Pierce with 2:02 remaining. Unfortunately for them the Rebels had an answer. After a timeout Danielle Ponter (10.6ppg) hit a basket for a 65-60 lead and the Rebels held the Blues scoreless until a free throw was made with 22 seconds left. Ponter shared the load with Jaylene Bonson (16.1ppg), both players hitting 14 while Jasmyn Hewett hit 13. For the Blues Carolyn Nyhouse led all scorers with 20, Perkins finished with 10 and Ruta Valiulyte 9.

Razzle Storm v Ansett

Ansett clobbered the Razzle Storm 117-79 to stay firmly entrenched in second place on the ladder. Jerron Jamerson fell one-point shy of his league high 55 with a stimulating 54 points, 35 points coming in a first half display that put the Blues on the winning track. At half time the score was 59-32 and there was no let up by the Blues in the second half as they soared away from the Storm. Support for Jamerson (35.8ppg) came from Brad Davis who hit 19 and Finn Clark who had 10. Carring most of the scoring load for the Storm was Brendan Dell (18.7ppg) with a season high 28, Karsten Oltrop with 13 and Chris Mahlstedt with 12.

Eagles v Lightning

The league leading Eagles dumped the Lightning 84-66 by staging a second half revival to overhaul the Lightning who had held a narrow 41-40 half time lead. The Lightning had built up the first half lead through newcomer William Schloss, Austin Kisselev and Chris Charman, but the scoring dipped significantly in the second half as the Eagles grabbed the momentum and cruised to the win. The third quarter was the turn-around point as the Eagles came out firing, hitting 9 straight unanswered points to take a 49-41 lead after 3 minutes of play and they never eased up, outscoring the Lightning 44-25 in the second half. Eagle Anthony Golden (33.1ppg) had the hot hand for the Birds, hitting a game high 47 with Shane Harrison adding a season high 20. Schloss hit 19, Kisselev 15 @ 23.8ppg and Charman 12.

Palmerston Power v Uni Rebels

The Palmerston Power upended the Uni Rebels in a minor upset 88-84 to slip into a tie with the Lightning for fourth place on the ladder. The Power trailed for almost the whole game as the Rebels enjoyed double figure leads for most of the match. However, the Power came home with a flurry and after Fisto Bizima (19.6ppg) hit a three pointer with 3:13 remaining they had the lead at 81-79. A scramble of fouls by the Rebels ensued putting Bizima on the line for free throws and he nailed two of them for an 83-79 lead and shortly thereafter Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson hit a basket and the score was at 85-79 all in just 18 seconds after Bizima’s trey! Bizima led the Power with 20, Ben Streeter hit 19, Hohipa-Wilson 15 and Caleb Pannell 13. For the Rebels Tim Morris (32.8ppg) hit a season high 44 and Spencer Coleman (28ppg) backed him up with his season high 28.
