Round 4

League Women -  Uni Rebels v Ansett

The Uni Rebels knocked off Ansett 70-59 in a fairly close tussle that put the Rebels into sole possession of third place on the ladder. Jaylene Bonson, Jasmyn Hewett & Jaylene Boundry combined for 50 of the Rebel points. The third quarter proved pivotal with the Rebels running off 19 points to 12 to take a 53-41 three quarter lead that was sparked by Hewett and Boundry. Six quick points to open the fourth quarter put the Rebels up by 18 points, a margin the Blues failed to overcome. Bonson finished up with 20, Hewett 16 & Boundry 14. For the Blues Kate Pierce led the side with 17, Alison Fleming hit 15 and Ruta Valiulyte 13.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles            

The biggest upset in well over a year was laid on the Tracy Village Jets by the Eagles as the Birds stopped the Jets winning streak at 38 with a convincing 71-58 win that lifted them into first place on the ladder. It is the first time in 5 years that a team other than the Jets has occupied the top of the ladder. However, the moment is with the Eagles and the inspiring play of young Ieasha Friel (photo) who continues to light up the scoreboard. Friel is also causing some defensive problems for opposing teams which has opened up scoring opportunities for others in the line-up. The Birds trailed at half time 41-35, but sizzled in the second half as they outscored the Jets 36-17 to fly home to victory. Friel hit 14 of her game high 21 in the second half. Trish Graham & Michelle Friel hit 14 each and Faye Armstrong added 10 for the winners while Kylie Duggan hit 14, Erin Geer 13 and Tikesa Docherty-Cole 12 for the Jets.

Men

League Men – Ansett v HPP

Ansett staged a last quarter revival to overhaul the upset minded HPP outfit for a cliff hanging 80-79 win. Jerron Jamerson hit his only basket of the last quarter with just 20 seconds left on the clock to give the Blues the victory. Up to that point the Blues trailed for the better part of 7 minutes in the last quarter. Ansett had held a 41-34 half time lead, but slipped behind after the HPP put in a 24-15 third quarter run for a 58-56 lead with a quarter to go. Some relentless pressure from the Blues put them back into contention and they did the job from the charity stripe where Jamerson hit 7 of his 13 free throws in the last quarter. The Blues hit 21 from the line to 13 for HPP. HPP put in a great team effort in the third quarter to peg back the Blues, but were unfortunate to lose out in the endgame. Jamerson top scored for the game with 41 points while Matthew Haniford chipped in with 14. Max Davies led the HPP with 16 while Jai O’Shaughnessy & Fisto Bizima hit 13 each.

Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

Anthony Golden hit 29 and Jesse Williams-Hook 18 as the Eagles drove past the Tracy Village Jets 76-55. The Birds kept their unbeaten streak going with four on the trot setting up a big game against the Uni Rebels next week. The Eagles had built up a 34-30 advantage by half time, but flew away from the Jets in the third quarter with a 22-10 run that set them up for the win. Steven Sing also added double figures for the Eagles with 11. Timothy Friend led the Jets with 15, Jett Sukcharoen had 10 and Jayden Adams 9.
