DBA League Results – 9th & 10th February 2017

Round 1

League Women Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

The reigning champs, the Tracy Village Jets, haven’t missed a beat since the last season as they dumped the Lightning 68-44 in their opening game of the 2017 Challenge Season. The victory pushed the Jets record winning streak out to 36. Kylie Duggan led the attack with 18 points followed by Tania Dhu with 16 and Tikesa Docherty-Cole with 12. A huge 22-8 first quarter score line put the Lightning squarely behind the eight ball to begin with presenting them with an uphill battle for the rest of the game. The Jets of course never lost their composure and cruised to the win. Dominique Carbone was the only Lightning player to hit double figures with 13, while Samantha Wilson had 9.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

Young Ieasha Friel set a record in her first game in League as she led the Eagles to a 72-57 win over the Uni Rebels. The 13yr old nailed 8 treys in her 34 point haul as she joined her mother Trish Graham and sister Michelle Friel on court for the first time in League play…a real family affair. The Rebels started out gang-busters hitting their first 15pts from outside the arc with Jaylene Boundry hitting 3 of the 5 treys. They led 21-14 after one quarter, but the Birds snuck to the front with a 15-7 second quarter to lead 29-28 at half time. The Eagles extended their lead to 8 at 50-42 by the end of the third quarter before blowing the Rebels away with a final 22-15 run in the last quarter. Friel started the game with a trey and ended it with a trey. The teams set a women’s record with 21 treys in the game. Graham hit 13 and Alysha Williams 10 in support of Friel while Jaylene Bonson lead the Rebels with 17 with Boundry addng 14.

Men

League Men Uni Rebels v HPP

Returned import Tim Morrison led the Uni Rebels to an 86-74 win over the High Performance Program outfit that has been put together by Basketball NT. The HPP team is a combination of players between 16-20 years of age and they come from all the League teams in the competition. The much more experienced Rebels took control in the beginning with a 21-8 first quarter followed up by a 21-12 second quarter to lead 42-20 at the half. Morrison and Marcus Ch’ng led from the front with Morrison hitting 9 free throws in the first stanza. He finished with 13 from the line for the game. The second half, however was mostly the HPP side getting into a rhythm and taking charge. Freddy Webb, Max Davies and Steven Sing found their footing and took it to the Rebels. The HPP outscored the Rebels in the second half 54-44 and during the last quarter ran off 14 unanswered points at one stage to get within 12points at 68-56. It was level pegging from that point until the end. Morrison (a game high 31) had support from Jake Kirby (17), Ch’ng (15) and Kurt Faux (10). For HPP Webb hit a team high 23, Davies finished with 10 and Sing & Jamie Thorne 9 each.
