Grand Final results

League Women Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

This year’s Championship Season Grand Final winners are the Tracy Village Jets who bumped off the Lightning 69-53 in the big dance on the 10th of December. The win by the Jets also set a new DBA record for most games without a defeat which now stands at 36. The win is also another DBA record in that the Jets have won 11 straight League championships going back to the Challenge Season in 2011. After overwhelming a very undermanned Lightning side (only 5 suited up) in the major semi-final 98-37 the Jets were not about to take their foot off the pedal in the GF. An opening first quarter score of 26-10 was an indication of intent of the Jets to put the game away early and they did just that. By half time the score was 47-24 and they were on their way to another comfortable win pretty much like all the others for the season…20 straight without loss. The Lightning did perk up a bit in the last quarter, but it was all for nought as the Jets rambled on towards another championship. The League’s highest point scorer, Tikesa Docherty-Cole (422pts) led the Jets with 18 followed by Kylie Duggan (16.3ppgt) with 15. Docherty-Cole also led the League in points average per game with 21. For the Lightning it was the League’s Under 21 Player of the Year Dominique Carbone who hit 18 followed by Grace Morcom on 11 and Hayley Hendricksen (365pts @ 20.2ppg) on 10. Carbone also hit more treys than anyone else with 39. For the record: the Jets did not lose a game this year…34 straight. And their record since winning the 2011 Challenge season is 213-21.

Woman’s MVP for the season was Hayley Hendricksen from the Lightning

Ladder:               Tracy Village Jets 20-0, Lightning 13-7, Palmerston Power 10-10, Eagles 6-13, Razzle 5-12, & Ansett 4-14

Men

League Men Ansett v Palmerston Power

Ansett took out the minor premiership and also won the Grand Final for the first time since 2012. Prior to that it was 1999. So they have had some lean years. The Blues knocked off surprise package Palmerston Power 93-81 to claim the title. The Power came from fourth spot to get into the GF. Ansett first beat the Eagles in the major semi-final and then waited for the illumination process to decide who they were to meet. Palmerston first toppled the Lightning and then put the Eagles out of contention in the Preliminary. In the Grand Final the Blues jumped out to a 22-14 first quarter lead and then surrendered the advantage in the second quarter to the Power who outscored them 26-21 to trail by just 3 at half time 43-40. It was neck and neck until the last quarter when the Blues put it all back together during a 30-19 run for the victory. Blues import Jerron Jamerson (34ppg – League leader) hit a high of 27 (681pts for season) with Brad Davis adding 23 and Matty Hunt 19 to lead Ansett while the Power’s Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson hit a season and game high 36 with Jesse Bell finishing on 15. Of note: Chad Keightly from Ansett was last part of a championship Blues team back in 1993 when they beat the Waratahs 59-50…23 years ago!

Men’s MVP for the season was Austin Kisselev from the Lightning

Ladder:       Ansett 18-2, Eagles 14-6, Palmerston Power 12-9, Lightning 10-9, Uni Rebels 10-8, Tracy Village Jets 3-15 & & Razzle 0-18
