Games from Round 15 (Women) - 19 (Men)

League Women Round 15 - Lightning v Palmerston Power

In a very close affair between the Lightning and Palmerston the Lightning prevailed 51-47. Hayley Hendricksen (18.6ppg) hit a season high 28 points to lead the attack, the only player for Lightning to get into double figures although all of her team mates put points on the scoreboard. Palmerston had opportunities, but failed to maintain any momentum and ended up surrendering a five point 45-40 lead with 6:26 left in the game. Hendricksen scored seven points in a 6 minute timeframe to give Lightning the lead at 51-45 as they wrestled the lead from Palmerston while also holding them scoreless during that time. Hendricksen hit 14pts from the charity stripe while the Power as a team on managed 2. The win should secure the double chance for the Lightning with only 3 games remaining before playoffs. Jeska Matthews hit 8 for Palmerston with Louise Turner on 7.

Eagles v Razzle

The Eagles got one step closer to a playoff position with a 53-42 win over the Razzle who mathematically still have a chance depending on how the Eagles wrap up the regulation season. Almost every Eagle made a significant point contribution to the win with Samantha Sanders (6ppg) leading the way with 12 points. The Birds flapped their way to a 16-10 first quarter lead that they built on in the second quarter to lead 25-13 at half time. The Green & Gold lifted in the third quarter and outscored the Birds 20-16 but still trailed by 8 with a quarter to go. They put in a strong effort midway through the last quarter to get with 45-40 after a Lailani Triffitt basket with 4:08 to play, but the Eagles took up the challenge and finished off the game from the free throw line thanks to accurate shooting from Chantelle Lee who hit 5pts in the last 3 minutes…3 from the charity stripe. Faye Armstrong & Molly Althouse added 8 apiece for the Eagles while Genelle Bridge (11.2ppg) hit 12 for the Razzle.

Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

Tikesa Docherty-Cole stayed on track to claim the best points scored per game title as she pumped in 31 points for the Tracy Village Jets in an easy 84-45 win over Ansett. The win was also the 31st consecutive victory for the club who are now just one shy of tying their own record of 32 that was set in last year’s Championship season. Most teams haven’t gotten within 20pts of them with the one exception being Lightning who lost by just 7 in Rd 12. So the odds are that they will set a new record soon. The Jets thundered away from the Blues in the third quarter with a 21-6 run that took their 29-23 lead out to 50-29. In the last quarter the Bombers lifted another notch to record 34-16 for the final score line. Docherty-Cole (21.5ppg) had support from Erin Geer (13ppg) who hit 26 and Frances Fatnowna who tallied 11. For the Blues Erin Boyd (14.4ppg) led the way with 16.

Ladder:  Tracy Village Jets 15-0, Lightning 10-4, Palmerston Power 7-8, Eagles 6-9, Razzle 4-10, & Ansett 3-12

Next week Round 16:          Thursday: Razzle v Ansett 6:30pm. Friday: Eagles v Lightning 6:30pm & Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston Power 8:00pm

Men

Lightning v Razzle

For the first time in Lightning history they won a game that coincided with a player milestone. The Lightning knocked off the Razzle 88-70 to celebrate a Dylan De Santis milestone as he notched up his 300th League game. Austin Kisselev (30.2ppg), Craig Martin (24.5ppg) and Cameron Bailey provided the firepower to win the game, combining for 69 points. Kisselev continues to dominate inside the paint no matter who the Lightning are playing. He leads the comp in 2pt conversions with 210, 20 baskets more than his nearest rival. The two sides began with level pegging for most of the first half until the Razzle hit a hot stretch to take a 38-28 second quarter lead with 5:15 remaining before the half. That was a wake-up call for the Lightning who shut down the Razzle after a Reed Ridder 3 pointer. Ridders shot gave them that 10pt lead, but they scored no more for the next five minutes as the Lightning bolted home before the break to tie the game up at 40 all. The Lightning kept the momentum in the third quarter putting up 20 to 10 points for a 61-50 lead they didn’t relinquish as they headed for the end of game celebrations. Kisselev finished with 36, Martin 19 & Bailey 14. Ridder (31.3ppg) led the charge for the Razzle with a game high 40, Daniel Calcatera 16 and Brendan Dell 11.

Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston Power

Fiston Bizima drained a three pointer with 25 seconds left on the clock to give the Palmerston Power a 101-79 win over the Tracy Village Jets and also put himself into the record book with a 13 trey haul. That last shot eclipsed the old record of 12 set by Timmy Duggan of the Eagles back in 2009! Bizima (16.1ppg) led the Power with a season and personal league high 43 points with Jesse Bell chipping in with 18 and Thomas Godwin 10. The Jets had actually taken a first quarter lead of 21-19 before the Power got plugged in. By half time it was 48-38 Power’s way and the rout was on. Jackson Tremlett (10ppg) hit a season high 23 for the Jets with Joel Stevens adding 14, Donte Ah Sam 13 and Jake Geer 12.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

Ansett set their sights on the silver at the end of the season with another win over rival Uni Rebels. The Blues won 92-87 for their second successive win in as many weeks over the Rebels who are vying for a shot at the GF come December. The Blues held a 47-41 half time lead and were up 74-58 at the end of three quarters of play. Looking poised to blow the Rebels away the unexpected happened and the Rebels came alive to claw their way back into the contest behind Jerrell Sanders & Jake Kirby. With 1:45 remaining Kirby hit a free throw and then 18 seconds later a basket the pulled the Rebels within 1 point at 88-87 with 57 seconds left. That was the last gasp for the Rebels as they tried frantically to get possession which of course meant fouling the Blues who happily added points from the charity stripe for the final score. Jerron Jamerson who continues to lead the league in points per game with 36.5 hit 36 for the Blues with 12 from Brad Davis (17.6ppg), 11 from Mitch O’Donoghue and 10 apiece from Matty Hunt (18.5ppg) & Freddy Webb. Jerrell Sanders (27.8ppg) led the Rebels with his best output for the season with 37. Kirby finished with 14.

Ladder:       Ansett 14-2, Eagles 12-4, Lightning 10-6, Rebels 9-8, Palmerston Power 9-7, Tracy Village Jets 3-14 & & Razzle 0-16

Next week Round 20:Thursday: Razzle v Palmerston Power 8:00pm. Friday: Tracy Village Jets v Eagles 6:30pm & Ansett v Lightning 8:00pm. Bye Uni Rebels
