Rounds 12 (Women) - 16 (Men)

League Women Round 12 -Thursday – Razzle v Palmerston Power

The Razzle pulled off the biggest upset in recent rounds when they stormed from behind in the last 5 minutes to edge past the Palmerston Power 57-55. Rebecca Murray (17.8ppg) shone like the sun for the Green & Gold as she hit a season high 33 points to lead the Razzle to their fourth win of the season and into a short lived playoff spot on the ladder. Palmerston looked home and hosed at the 5:11 mark of the fourth quarter with a 53-45 lead after two consecutive baskets by Haven Hohipa-Wilson. But a momentum shift to the Razzle put them into a position to win. The Razzle held the Power scoreless for the next 4 minutes while Murray went on a tear scoring 7 straight points to bring them within one point of the Power. It was then, with 1:22 left in the game, that Genelle Bridge nailed a three-pointer to tie up the game at 55 all. Bridge followed that bucket up with a two pointer with just 27 seconds left to seal the win. Bridge (11.7ppg) finished with 9 points. Rebecca Thorne led the Power with 13 and Hohipa-Wilson (8.8ppg) finished with 9.

Eagles v Ansett

Molly Althouse matched her season best with 19 points to lead the Eagles past Ansett 62-50. The win put the Birds back into 4th place on the ladder just ahead of the Razzle who had momentarily held the spot after winning on Thursday night. The Birds, however, got a good game from Althouse and also 13 from Trish Graham as they put together a solid team effort to get the win. Ansett only trailed by 3 at the end of three quarter time (44-41) thanks in a large part to a great 25 point season high from the Blues Erin Boyd. But the Birds did get on with the job to claim only their fourth win of the season.

Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Win number 27 in a row came at the expense of the Lighting side that lost out to the Tracy Village Jets 62-55. Not a high scoring affair as usual for the Jets and it was the closest any team has gotten to them so far this season. The Lightning can consider themselves unlucky, but the Bombers did have all the answers at the right time. The Jets jumped out to a 20-13 first quarter lead, played the Lightning even in the second quarter with 9 each, but then lost a bit of ground after the break as the Lightning outscored them 21-16 to trail by just 2pts at 45-43 heading into the last quarter. To start the last quarter the Jets hit 8 straight points to take a 53-43 lead and they never lost that ten point advantage until the closing minute of play. Tikesa Docherty-Cole led the Jets with 14 and Leah Seden added 12. Hayley Hendricksen & Dominique Carbone hit 17 and 12 for the Lightning.

Men

League Men – Round 16 - Thursday – Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels continue to march up the ladder after they outgunned the league leading Eagles 92-79. Not only did they win their 5th game out of the last 6, but they celebrated a milestone for Rebel stalwart Jamie Hamill who was playing his 700th League game! The Rebels fittingly dropped 14 treys on the Eagles (Hamill’s forte) and also held the league’s leading scorer, Alex Fertig, to just 12 points, well below his 36ppg average. Jerrell Sanders (26ppg) led the Rebels with 26 (his average) and he had plenty of backup from Jake Kirby (16ppg) & Chad Bewley (21 each) and 11 from Hamill. The Rebels charged out to a 21-14 first quarter lead, built it up to a 44-38 buffer by half time and then held the Birds to just 14 in the third quarter while scoring 23. The lead was 15 with a quarter to go (67-52) and proved too much for the Birds to overcome. The last shot of the game was a three pointer from…Hamill. Other Eagles scorers were Joseph Johnson (23.5ppg) who led the side with 21, 19 to Jesse Williams-Hook and 13 for Jordan Sing.

For the record: Hamill has been in 10 Grand Finals and on the winning side 8 times. 4 wins in each of the seasons – Challenge & Championship. This is his 25th year in League play. Jamie set the original record for most treys in a season back in 2001…he hit 51. And he continues to let fly from outside the arc. He has played 576 games for the Rebels, 116 for South Darwin and 8 for the Eagles.

Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

Ansett blew the Tracy Village Jets outa the water with a 102-57 drubbing that hasn’t happened for a long time to the Jets men. The Blues didn’t hold back with the onslaught as they tossed up 19 treys during the route, 6 of them from the hands of Freddy Webb who tallied a total of 23 points during the encounter. The win also catapulted the Blues back into first place on the ladder. Those 19 treys equaled the total output of the Jets team…57 points. Without the firepower of Travis Ellis (21ppg) in the line-up to give them a bit more respectability the Jets struggled to keep up with the Blues. A 20-9 run in the first quarter set the Blues up and despite a better second quarter showing from the Jets (18-22) they were destined to end up in the loss column. Brad Davis & Jerron Jamerson (34ppg) hit 25 each and Mitch O’Donoghue 14. Jackson Tremlett led the Jets with 14 and Ross Vasic 10.

Palmerston Power v Lightning

Lightning kept in touch with the top four of what is now a five horse race by sliding past the Palmerston Power 87-82 despite the absence of big man Craig Martin. Austin Kisselev (29.2ppg) stepped up big time to rack up a season high 43, but the Lightning had to hang on for dear life in the last three minutes to notch up the win. Lightning led 81-69 with 3:29 remaining when they hit the wall…no points for almost a full 3 minutes. During that span of time Jarrod Sheppard pumped in 8pts during a 13 point unanswered run from the Power to get them within 1 point at 81-80 with 1:02 left. However, Lightning finally hit a basket and they were off again, finishing off the Power from the charity stripe in the closing seconds of the game. Backing up Kisselev was Cameron Bailey with 10, Chris Charman & Tom Maher with 9 each. Sheppard (14ppg) finished with a team & season high 30 and Jesse Bell (22.6ppg) hit 26.

Ladder:       Eagles 10-4, Ansett 11-2, Rebels 7-6 & Palmerston Power 7-6, Lightning 7-5, Tracy Village Jets 2-10 & & Razzle 0-11

Next week Round 17:Thursday: Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets 8:00pm. Friday: Eagles v Lightning 6:30pm & Ansett v Razzle 8:00pm. Bye Palmerston Power
