Rounds 10 (Women) & 13 (Men)

League Women Rd 10 -Thursday – Palmerston v Lightning

A real ‘nail-biter’ for the teams in this game! Palmerston just pipped the Lightning 47-43 in a see-sawing battle where the outcome was always in doubt. The Lightning held a narrow 12-7 first quarter lead, but that evaporated early in the second quarter to put the teams on level pegging throughout the rest of the match. The Lightning last held the lead at 42-41 after a basket by Peta Bailey with just 1:04 remaining. The Power then won the game from the free throw line as both sides tried desperately to break away from each other. Edith Boundry (8.2ppg) hit 3 free throws in the last 29 seconds to seal the game for the Power. Boundry finished with 10 as did team mate Lee Piantadosi. Grace Morcom (12ppg) led the Lightning with 16 with Kira Pendelbury on 8.

Razzle v Eagles

The Eagles broke a six game losing streak to get back into the playoff picture with a big 72-57 win over the Razzle. The two sides were locked up in a see-saw game for three quarters before the Birds took flight in the fourth quarter to win going away. This was despite having only four players on the court as Faye Armstrong had fouled out only three minutes into the third quarter. Only five players had suited up for the game. Trish Graham & Michelle Friel (15.2ppg) had their best scoring games of the season with Graham (16.5ppg) hitting 33 and Friel 27. Friel hit 15 of her total in the last quarter as the Birds blew past the surprised Razzle outscoring them 29-16. Top scorers for the Razzle were Rebecca Murray (15ppg) with 19 and Genelle Bridge, Lailani Triffitt & Kaylena Marimowa all on 10.

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Ansett became the Tracy Village Jets 25th victim as the Bombers kept that winning streak going with a blow-out 89-30 win that was in no doubt from the outset. A first quarter score-line of 22-0 was an indication of what was to come for the remainder of the game. The Blues had no chance. Apart from the Razzle’s Erin Boyd (16 @ 12.8ppg) all the usual scorers for the Green & Gold were shut down by the tenacious defense of the Bombers. Boyd finished up with 16 but no other player reached more than 5, whereas the Bombers had scorers in plenty with Kylie Duggan (19.8ppg) on 22, Sam Rioli 17, Tikesa Docherty-Cole 15 @ 22.6ppg, Leah Seden 14 and Abby Cubillo 10. The return of Australian representative Cubillo to the line-up for the Bombers makes them even more formidable.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 9-0, Palmerston Power 6-3, Lightning 5-3, Eagles 3-6, Ansett 2-7 & Razzle 2-6

Next week Round 11:          Thursday: Ansett v Razzle 6:30pm. Friday: Lightning v Eagles 6:30pm & Palmerston Power v Tracy Village Jets 8:00pm

Men

League Men – Rd 13 - Thursday – Palmerston Power v Razzle

The Palmerston Power notched up their sixth win of the season as they edged past the Razzle 94-85. The Power were hard pressed to win the contest as the Razzle put in a sustained effort to overhaul the Power in the last quarter thanks to the hot handed Reed Ridder (30ppg) who led all scorers with 44. The Power had given themselves a good 13 point buffer after one quarter of play (27-14), but the Razzle fought back for the next two quarters to trail by just 6 at 72-66 with a quarter to go. They finally hit the front after a Ridder 3 pointer with 5:34 remaining at 79-77, but that lead only lasted about 15 seconds before Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson (15.7ppgt) hit two free throws and Aaron Simpson a basket to give the Power the lead for good at 81-79 with 4:30 to play. A good win for the Power, but an indication that maybe the Razzle are about to break the drought. Hohipa-Wilson ended up with 23, Jarrod Sheppard, Fisto Bizima & Aaron Simpson all had 18. For the Razzle Brendan Dell (14) & Simon Radecki (11) lent support to Ridder.

Lightning v Ansett

Ansett’s high flying act finally came tumbling down as they lost their first game of the season to the Lightning by a whopping 110-63. The best start ever for the Blues was ground to a halt by defense minded Lightning outfit that held one of the league’s leading scorers to twenty points under his average. Ansett’s Jerron Jamerson (36ppg) was held to just 16 while some of the other Blues scorers were similary held in check. While the Lightning defense was holding strong Craig Martin (27ppg) and Alex Kisselev (29ppg) teamed up for 71 points between them. By three quarter time the Lightning held a 72-44 advantage and they pressed home that advantage in the last quarter with a 38-19 run to blow the Blues off the court. Martin finished with a game high 39, Kisselev 32 and Dylan De Santis 10. For the Blues Jamerson had 16, Mitch O’Donoghue 12, Freddy Webb 11 and Joseph Stewart 10.

Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

The Eagles used a second quarter 20-8 scoring outburst to propel them to a 90-78 win against an undermanned Tracy Village Jet side. The scoring run gave the Birds a 45-29 lead at half time that stood up for the rest of the game. Alex Fertig (38.89ppg) hit 37 to lead the Eagles with Joseph Johnson (25ppg) adding 29 and Reece Turner 13. The Jets only suited up five players and they did a creditable job in hanging with the Birds throughout most of the game, but couldn’t string together enough points to overcome the lead the Eagles had. Jackson Tremlett (7ppg) & Joel Stevens hit a team high 19 each with Liam MacLachlan on 17 and Alex Weetra 14.

Ladder:       Ansett 9-1, Eagles 8-2, Palmerston Power 6-3, Lightning 5-4, Rebels 3-6, Tracy Village Jets 2-8 & & Razzle 0-9

Next week Round 14:                  Thursday: Ansett v Palmerston Power 8:00pm. Friday: Uni Rebels v Lightning 6:30pm & Eagles v Razzle 8:00pm. Bye Tracy Village Jets
