Round three

League Women – Palmerston Power v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets celebrated the 500th League game played by Jodi Tremlett with a solid 66-42 victory over the Palmerston Power. Tikesa Docherty-Cole (18), Sam Rioli (17) and Kylie Duggan (16) paved the way as the Bombers racked up their 18th straight consecutive win in League competition. Tremlett is now ranked 4th all-time in seasons played (44) in League competition behind Trish Graham (still active with 50), Kathy Kellum (48) and Dahlia Docherty (50). The Bombers didn’t blow Palmerston away as they have been doing to others in the first two rounds, but steadily pulled away during the encounter. Jaylene Boundry, who has transferred from the Uni Rebels with sister Edith, top scored for the Power with 12 points.

Ansett v Razzle

Ansett picked up their first win of the season with a comprehensive 77-49 victory over the Razzle. Tamiyah Perkins lifted the Blues with her return to the court. Perkins hit a game high 22 in her first outing of the season and 15 of those points came from beyond the arc. The first quarter was played even and then in the second the Blues pumped in 29 points to just 12 for the Razzle with Perkins hitting 8 of her total and the Blues hitting 5 treys during the run. The 17pt lead at half time proved to be too much of a hurdle for the Razzle to overcome in the second half. Sophie Hatzismalis lent support to Perkins with 18 points while Rebecca Murray (20) and Lailani Triffit (10) did the bulk of scoring for the Green & Gold.

Eagles v Lightning

Lightning grabbed an important win over the Eagles 55-48 to remain undefeated at this early stage of the competition. The Eagles had a woeful start to the game, scoring only 3pts (3 free throws) to 12 for the Lightning in the first quarter. Lightning’s Dominique Carbone played one of her best League games to lead the side with 17 points (including 3 treys). Lightning held a 29-18 lead at the half, added 4 more to that by the end of three quarter time 43-28 and then weathered the last quarter 20 to 12 surge from the Birds to put the win in the column. Hayley Hendricksen chipped in with 15 and Kira Pendlebury 11 for the Lightning. Trish Graham led all scorers with 23 for the Birds while Kristina Martinson hit 11.

Men

League Men – Thursday – Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The two new imports for the Uni Rebels continued to fill the hoop as they, Rich Brown (30) & Chad Bewley (20), led the Rebels to a narrow 86-83 win over the Tracy Village Jets. It came right down to the wire with Brown making a pair of crucial free throws with just 11 seconds left on the clock for an 86-80 lead. Timmy Duggan (10) from the Jets hit a trey with just 6 seconds remaining, but the Bombers couldn’t hit another before time ran out. The Rebels had built up a 10pt lead at 79-69 with just 3 minutes left, but the Bombers rallied back with an 11-5 run in the next 2 ½ minutes that almost pulled the rabbit out of the hat. Travis Ellis played his 450th game and took scoring honours for the Bombers with 25 followed by 14 from Alex Weetra, 13 from Shannon Bartlett and 11 from Michael MacLean. Jake Kirby nailed 18 in support of Brown & Bewley and club stalwart Jamie Hamill hit a big milestone as he finally reached 5,000pts. He is after this game on 5004pts scored for 690 games played!

Eagles v Lightning

Alex Firtig hit 40 points to lead the Eagles to a hard fought 91-85 win over the Lightning. Lightning’s tall duo of Alex Kisselev & Craig Martin teamed up for a combined 52 points, but Firtig had more help from the Birds with three others tallying double figures that more than offset the combo from the Lightning’s bigs. The game see-sawed throughout with never more than 7pts separating the teams. Lightning held a 63-62 lead with just seconds left in the third quarter, but that disappeared before the term ended with a Firtig basket. The Eagles were never headed after that, although Lightning remained in contention right to the end. Others to hit double figures for the Eagles were Joseph Johnson 18, Reece Turner 12 & Dirk Steenbergen 11. Kisselev finished with 29, Martin 23 and Steven Ting 12.

Ansett v Razzle

Ansett blewthe Razzle off the court with a monster 127-56 win that put them on top of the ladderwith a 3-0 record. Jerron Jamerson hit a league high 55 points to lead the way with Mitch O’Donoghue adding 21, all from outside the arc. A huge 36-4 score-line in the first quarter favouring the Blues proved to be a hill too high to climb for the Razzle. Brendan Dell tallied 16, Kayden Malseed 13 & Zac Derkson 10 for the Razzle

Ladder:     Ansett 3-0, Eagles 2-1, & Tracy Village Jets & Uni Rebels 1-2, Palmerston Power & Lightning 1-1, & Razzle 0-2
