Round 6

League Women – Thursday – Eagles v Lightning

The Eagle women won their first game of the year on Thursday night, knocking off the Lightning 69-55. Trish Graham led the Birds with 25 points (13.5ppg). The Eagles soared out of the nest in the first quarter with a 20-8 run that left the Lightning with a big hill to climb to get back into the contest. By the main break the score was 29-12 for the Birds. The Lightning managed to pull back a few points in the third quarter with a 23-15 run, but the Birds responded with a 25-20 fourth quarter run to claim the win. Lending support to Graham were Alysha-Marie Williams with 12 and Faye Armstrong with 9. For the Lightning Dominique Carbone led the side with 21, Grace Morcom had 13 and Kira Pendlebury 10.

Palmerston Power v Ansett

Ansett hung on for dear life at the end of their close 56-50 win over the Palmerston Power. Leading for most of the game the Blues found themselves in some strife in the last quarter as the Power mounted a serious challenge to overcome a 15 point deficit. Tamara Sheppard, Clancy Dorman and Isabella Politis help the Blues build up the lead throughout the first three quarters, but someone put a lid on the basket in the last quarter. The Power outscored the Blues 17-8 in the last stanza, but had to take a back seat as the Blues managed to cling on to their lead for the win. Sheppard (21ppg) finished with 15, Dorman 12 @ 14.3ppg and Politis10 while Jennifer Kinsella (9ppg) hit 14 for the Power with Brittany Ward & Rebecca Thorne adding 12 each.

Tracy Village Jets v Razzle

The Tracy Village Jets demolished the Razzle 102-42 to run their win streak out to 14 in a row. The 60 point thrashing was highlighted by some accurate shooting from Tikesa Docherty-Cole (33 @ 20.6ppg) and Erin Geer (22 @ 15.6ppg). The Jets got the best of all possible starts to the game with a 27-0 first quarter run. Erin Boyd top scored for the Razzle with 18.

Men

League Men – Eagles v Lightning

Lightning claimed outright first place on the ladder with a hard fought 83-75 win over the Eagles. The Birds had the lead for most of the game albeit a tenuous one for the most part. However, the Lightning were always within striking distance and they did just that with only 2:37 remaining in the game. At that point the Eagles had a 73-69 lead, but 8 straight un-answered points by the Lightning changed the momentum of the game and gave the Lightning a surprising win at the end of it. Craig Martin (33ppg) and Austin Kisselev (26.3ppg) did most of the damage for the Lightning scoring 31 and 28 respectively with help from Cameron Bailey with 12. The Birds were led by Jarrod Sheppard with 20 (15.2ppg), Joseph Johnson 16 (31.2ppg), Joseph Prophet 14 and Reece Turner with 13.

Tracy Village Jets v Razzle

The under manned Tracy Village Jets brought their A game to the match against the Razzle to run out victors 86-50 with just six players suited up. The Bombers led at the end of every quarter to secure third place on the ladder. Jai O’Shaughessy (8ppg) hit a league career high 26 to lead the Bombers with Jake Geer on 15, Henry Bui 14, Liam MacLachlan 12 and Jackson Tremlett 11. William Carroll (8ppg) for the Razzle hit 20 with Brendan Dell & Nathan Radonich adding 11 each.

Palmerston Power v Ansett

Jesse Bell & Thomas Godwin combined for 43 points to lead the Palmerston Power to a 74-64 victory over Ansett. In a game of changing fortunes the Power took a 25-12 lead after one quarter, but the Blues ran off 28-6 in the second quarter to lead 40-31 at the half time break. The third quarter was all Power as they bolted back during a 23-9 run to set the stage for the last quarter. Leading by just 5 going into the last quarter the Power did just enough to close out the game and give themselves a share of first place on the ladder. Bell (23.7ppg) finished with 22, Godwin 21, Fisto Bizima 12 and Aaron Simpson 10. Brad Davis (22.6ppg) led all scorers with 26 for the Blues while team mate Mitch O’Donoghue hit 17.
