Round 11

League Women – Razzle v Uni Rebels (Thursday)

The Uni Rebels racked up another win against the Razzle 70-55, but they had to work their way into the game after a good start by the Green & Gold in the first quarter. Lailani Treiffitt & Erin Boyd were leading by example as the Razzle took an early 17-16 lead after one quarter of play. In the second quarter, however, the Rebels got their act together and put together a run of 20-10 to lead at the half 36-27. After the break the Rebels added pressure by going on a 18-9 run behind the hot handed Ambah Kowcun who hit 16 of her game high 27 in the third quarter. It was game over no matter what the Razzle tried. Jaylene Boundry hit 16 and sister Edith 11 in support of Kowcun while Boyd led the Razzle with 20 and new recruit Inga Vareikaite had 12.

Ansett v Eagles

Ansett staged a strong come from behind 65-61 victory over the Eagles on Friday night. Ansett was trailing 39-27 at half time due to some inspiring play from Eagles Trish Graham and Jasmine Stovall, but after the break cracks started to show in the Eagle defense and their lead began to dwindle. The Blues stiffened up on defense and clawed their way into a 45-44 lead by the end of the third quarter after stringing together an 18-5 run led by Kisha Lee. The last quarter was a see-saw affair that the Blues won in the end. The win moved them up into sole possession of second place on the ladder and they seem to be getting stronger with each round. Lee finished up leading all scorers in the contest with 26 & team mate Ashton Eaton had 15. For the Eagles Stovall ended up with 20 and Graham 17.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Captain Sam Rioli hit a team high 19 to lead the Tracy Village Jets to a 71-46 win against the Lightning. Rioli along with Kylie Duggan set the Jets on their path to victory with 14 of the Jets points in the first quarter as they shot out to a 20-12 lead. Lightning lifted in the second quarter to win it 16-14 to trail by just 6 at half time, but after the break the Jets went off on a 20-6 run to more or less seal the win. Duggan hit 18, Frances Fatnowna & Tikesa Docherty-Cole 10 each while for the Lightning the only player to hit double figures was Brittany Ward with 19.

Ladder:               Tracy Village Jets 10-1, Ansett 6-5, Uni Rebels 6-4, Egles 5-6, Lightning 4-6 & Razzle 1-9

Men Rounds 11 & 12

League Men – Lightning v Uni Rebels (Thursday) Rounds

Lightning put up a good fight, but the Uni Rebels charged through the opposition to record their 10th win of the season 72-66 without defeat. Tyler Jefferson hit above 30 for the fourth time this competition, nailing 38 while livewire guard Marcus Ch’ng chipped in with 19. The Rebels had built up a 36-25 half time lead, but hung on despite a spirited second half revival from the Lightning who got major input from Craig Martin and Cameron Bailey who worked overtime to knock off the league leaders. Martin finished with 16, Bailey 14 and newcomer Lachlan Edwards 10. Edwards is a bona fide find for the Lightning and will add more firepower and defense to the team.

Saturday: Ansett v Uni Rebels

The bubble burst for the Uni Rebels as sixth placed Ansett took flight to end the undefeated streak 76-69. The Rebels shot out to a 48-34 half time lead as Tyler Jefferson and Marcus Ch’ng scored at will and had complete control of momentum. This all changed in the second half as that momentum shifted to the Blues who were intent on containing the shooting of Jefferson and Ch’ng through the defensive efforts of Jason Goodwin & Jake Feeney. John King and Matteo Rowse became major factors in controlling the game from the point and they were nailing their shots, particularly at the end of the game. Top effort from the Blues to steal one from the Rebels.

Razzle v Tracy Village Jets

The Razzle ambushed the Tracy Village Jets on Friday night to record their first win of the season, a 70-62 victory that was well earned. Four players hit double figures for the Green & Gold with Rob Oliver putting up 19, Stuart Peace 15, Saxon Radecki 12 & David Carroll 10. The Razzle grabbed a slim 15-11 lead at the end of one quarter and the Jets reversed it in the second with a 16-11 run for a one point lead at half time 27-26. The Razzle came out firing in the third term and ran off 18 unanswered points to set up a big buffer heading into the last quarter. The young Jets threw everything at the Razzle but they refused to buckle and held on despite the Jets outscoring them 27-22 in the term. Jett Sukcharoen from the Jets hit 21, Jackson Tremlett 11 & Joshua Smith 10.

Saturday: Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

The Eagles added to the Tracy Village Jets woes by beating them 72-59 after a very un-Eagle like start to the game. The Birds were down 17-3 with a minute left to play in the first quarter! They (Eagles) did score 7pts in the last minute with Lachlan Shipway hitting a three on the buzzer to make the score line a bit more respectable. The second quarter proved to be a confidence builder as the Eagles won the quarter 17-8 to tie the game up at 27 all at half time. The third quarter proved pivotal as the Eagles ran off 28 points to 15 for the Jets to set up the win. Jesse Williams-Hook, Ernest Holmes and Deola D’Folarin being the main contributors during the term. D’Folarin led the Birds with 23, Williams-Hook had 14, Holmes 13 and Henry Bui 10. Travis Ellis led the Jets with 22 and Henry Callander 10.

Eagles v Palmerston Power

In a very hard fought game against the Palmerston Power on Friday night the Eagles came out on top 74-61, handing the second placed Power only their third loss of the competition. The Eagles led 33-30 at half time, but the Power scrambled back to be within one point at 52-51 after Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson kicked off the last quarter with a quick bucket. However, that was a close as the Power got for the remainder of the quarter as the Birds slowly took charge and built up a lead that the Power could not overcome. Five players for the Eagles hit double figures as they shared the ball around. They also put up 7 treys during the game, 3 each to Reece Turner and Ernest Holmes. Eagle Deola D’Folarin led all scorers with 23, Jesse Williams-Hook 16, Turner 13 and Holmes & Henry Bui 11 each. Hohipa-Wilson had 18, Jesse Bell 15 and Tom Godwin 10 for the Power.

Ladder:   Uni Rebels 10-1, Palmerston Power 7-3, Eagles 5-5, Lightning 5-4,Tracy Village Jets 4-7, Ansett 3-7 & Razzle 1-8

Next week Round 13:            Thursday – Palmerston Power v Tracy Village Jets 8:00pm. Friday – Ansett v Razzle 6:30, Eagles v Lightning 8:00pm, Bye – Uni Rebels
