Round 6

League Women Thursday – Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets had to scramble back from the brink of defeat to overcome a stubborn   Lightning side that almost pulled off the upset of the year. The Jets won the low scoring game 41-38 after trailing for the better part of the match. The shots weren’t dropping as they normally do for the Bombers and it wasn’t until the last quarter that they got the better of their younger opposition. Demi Cubillo ignited the Bomber comeback in the last quarter with a bucket and free throw to start a 10-4 run that won the game. At the beginning of the game the Lightning had everything going for them as they slowed down the Bomber transition game with some hard work inside the keyway by Chelsea Hambour and Kira Pendlebury and their shots were dropping. Lightning held a slim 24-20 half time lead thanks to Kelly Doherty and Hambour. By the end of three quarters Lightning still held the lead although it was now at 34-31. Then the Bombers took charge with Cubillo at the front. Cubillo and Danielle Totham led the Bombers with 11 apiece. Doherty led the Lightning with 9, Hambour had 8 and Yasmin Decurtins hit 7.

Eagles v Ansett

The Eagles knocked off Ansett 54-44 after a slow start to the game. The Birds trailed 14-6 after one quarter as Clancy Dorman and Liz Paice combined for 9pts during the run. In the second quarter the Birds lifted behind Faye Armstrong and Trish Graham as they went on an 18-7 run to hold the lead at half time 24-21. The Eagles kept the lead for the remainder of the game despite the efforts of Paice who finished up with a game high 18. Armstrong led the Birds with 16 while Graham & Lillian Williams had 12 each. Dorman ended up with 10 for the Blues.

Uni Rebels v Razzle

The Uni Rebels beat the Razzle 57-44, but had to stage a come-back to do it. The green and gold had put together a good first half through a solid team effort to lead 21-18. It was a short lived lead as the Rebels regrouped to outscore them 39-23 in the second half. The third quarter proved to be the downfall of the Razzle as Rebel Tulaha Jeffrey came out firing, hitting the first 8pts of the quarter as the Rebels charged ahead to take control of the game. Jeffrey hit a team high 16 followed by Ambah Kowcun with 15 and Chantelle Lee with 12. For the Razzle Lailani Triffitt hit a game high 18 with team mate Erin Boyd adding 11.

League Men Thursday – Lightning v Razzle

Lightning dismantled the Razzle 80-33 for their fifth win of the season. Apart from a close first quarter (14-12 Lightning) the Razzle never rose to the challenge. Karsten Oltrop & Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson put the Lightning on track for the win with a dominant second quarter as they led an 18-5 run for a 32-17 half time lead. The second half was a complete blow-out as the Lightning held the green and gold to just 16 points while tallying 48 to put the finishing touches to the rout. Hohipa-Wilson led all scorers with a season high 26, Oltrop finished with 16 and Craig Martin hit 14 (even though he only entered the game half way through the third quarter!). William McClay hit 9 and David Carroll 8 for the Razzle.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

Another 30+ point game from Tim Morris led the way for the Uni Rebels as they slipped past Ansett 85-74 to stay atop the ladder with an unbeaten record. Unfortunately for the Rebels that was Morris’s last game before returning to the states. He will be sorely missed. Morris led all scorers with a game high 37 with help from Jake Kirby (17) and Lance Schmidt (14). The Blues held a 17-11 first quarter lead, but failed to stop the Rebels from overtaking them. Just before the half time buzzer Morris nailed a three pointer to give the Rebels a 40-37 half time lead. The contest remained close but the Rebels maintained the lead throughout the second half for the win. Matteo Rowse led the Blues with 21 points, Tom Hunt hit 15, Matthew Flanegan 13 and Jake Feeney 11. It was also the last game for player/coach Tom Hunt who will be moving on.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The ‘Cliff-hanger’ (the Jets & Eagles do it often) materialized in the match-up between the Tracy Village Jets and the Eagles. The Jets winning the nail biter 78-77 with a free throw by Michael MacLean with just 1.8 seconds left in the contest. The lead up was the last 40 seconds of the game. The Eagles were up 74-72 with 40s to go when MacLean hit a trey to give Jets 75-74 lead. Eagle Reece Turner replied with a trey to give Eagles a 77-75 lead. 25 seconds left. MacLean weaves his way into keyway and nails a bucket to tie score at 77 each. 15 seconds left. Eagles get off a shot but miss and MacLean is fouled during play phase. Sent to free throw line for two with 1.8s left in game. MacLean hits first free throw…game over. MacLean finished up with 33 points, Travis Ellis 20 and Darrin Weetra 12 (all treys). Chris Hart led the Birds with 24 Turner 21 and Henry Bui 10.
