Semi-Finals

League Women – Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

Grand Final favourite Tracy Village Jets came out firing and dumped the Eagles 75-46 to advance straight into this year’s Championship Season Grand Final to be held on the 6th of December. The Eagles failed to put together any serious challenge against the Bombers and will now face off against Ansett in the Preliminary next Friday to see which team will get a shot at the Jets in the GF. The three mainstays of the Bombers offense, Abby Cubillo, Sam Rioli and Tania Dhu stepped up in this game with 17, 14 and 13 points respectively and the support from the rest of the team was solid…every player put points on the scoreboard. Kimberly Brown from the Eagles was the only player in double figures for the Birds with 17. Defensively the Jets put the clamp on some of the most consistent scorers for the Eagles. Lillian Williams was held to just 3pts (she averages 11ppg), Michelle Friel had 7 (11ppg avg) and Trish Graham had 4 (10ppg avg). The dominating Jets have only lost two games this year. Whoever makes it to the Grand Final as their opposition will have their hands full in the biggest game of the year.

Ansett v Lightning

Ansett sent the Lightning packing with a decisive 94-57 win that sets up a meeting with the Eagles in next week’s Preliminary final. The Blues wasted little time in setting up the big win as they set off on a 16-9 first quarter run followed up by a 23-8 run just before half time to lead by 22 at the break 39-17. Ashton Eaton lit up the scoreboard for the Blues with a team and game high 40 points, the second time this season that she has hit 40. Sam Drescher added 21 and Liz Paice chipped in with 18. For the young Lightning outfit three of them hit double figures; Kira Pendlebury and Bonnie Illingworth hit 12 apiece and Yasmin Decurtins had 11.

Ladder after Semi-finals:                             Tracy Village Jets 19-1, Eagles 10-10, Ansett 8-14, Lightning 4-16 – Ladder includes forfeits

Next Friday Preliminary final:                  Eagles v Ansett 6:15pm

League Men – Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels won the latest close encounter with the Eagles 82-79 to book a spot in this year’s Championship Season Grand Final. The Rebels trailed 44-32 at half time and came charging back to pip the Eagles at the post. The last time the two sides met the Birds won by one point. The Rebels took full advantage of a defensive change by the Eagles in the second half when the Birds went from a man to man defense into a zone. The change gave the Rebels a chance and they slowly chipped away at the Eagle lead until they were only down by two points at 57-55 with a quarter to go. The momentum was with the Rebels and they finally took the lead forcing the Eagles into a fouling situation favouring the Rebels. The Rebels hit 18 to 9 free throws for the game, eight of them in a row at the end of the game to win. Tim Morris top scored for the Rebels with 34 with running mate John King nailing 28. For the Eagles it was Chris Hart with a game high 35, James Silvie 19 and Reece Turner with 11. The Eagles now have the task of trying bump off Ansett in next week’s Preliminary final in order to get another crack at the Rebels.

Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

Ansett had to fight hard to hold off the Tracy Village Jets 72-65 in the ‘knock-out’ semi-final, thereby giving them a shot at the Eagles in the Preliminary final next week. There wasn’t much that separated the two teams during the encounter. Donte Nicholas kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Blues with teammate Matteo Rowse firing away from outside the arc for good measure. The Jets were doing pretty much the same on their side of the court with Travis Ellis, Alex Weetra and Michael MacLean working hard to stay in touch with the Blues. It was 36-34 the Blues way at half-time and it didn’t change much for the rest of the game. The Bombers just couldn’t make any headway and Nicholas finished them off with three straight points from the charity stripe. Nicholas top scored for the game with 30 and Rowse hit 23 (including 7 treys). Weetra led the Jets with 15, Ellis finished up on 13 and MacLean 10.

Ladder after Semi-finals:                              Eagles 13-5, Uni Rebels 13-6, Ansett 12-7, Lightning 8-10, Tracy Village Jets 9-9, Palmerston Power 7-11, & Razzle 2-17 – Ladder includes forfeits

Next Friday Preliminary final:           Eagles v Ansett 7:45pm
