League Women Round 14 – Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The Uni Rebels stopped the Tracy Village Jets winning streak at 13 with a nail biting 58-55 win to hand the ladder leaders their first loss of the season. The biggest upset of the season so far was led by Jaylene Bonson who hit a game and season high 23 points for the Rebels who still trail the Jets on the ladder by 7pts. The Jets were in the lead at half time by just two points at 27-25 and it took until the last quarter before the Rebels made their move. Bonson nailed a three pointer to open the quarter and the Rebels were off and running hitting 16 points to just 11 for the Bombers to claim the win. One fact that was noteworthy was the lack of any scoring by Abby Cubillo who has been averaging 16pts a game. Erin Geer led the Bombers with 18, Sam Rioli had 14 and Tania Dhu hit 13.

Palmerston v Lightning

Christine Cooper hit a season high 19 points to lead Palmerston to a 43-34 win over Lightning. A 13 to 2 first quarter run by the Power set the stage for a winning effort. A big push in the last quarter sparked by Kira Pendlebury gave the Lightning a glimmer of hope, but it was quashed by Cooper’s shooting, she hit the last 10 points of the quarter to end any chance Lightning may have had. Pendlebury finished up with 10 points.

Eagles v Ansett

The Eagles finally got back on the winning track with a 58-38 thumping of Ansett. Lillian Williams and Michelle Friel led the Birds with 20 and 18 points. Tamiyah Perkins led the Blues with 11 and team mate Clancy Dorman also hit double figures with 10. The win by the Birds gives them a bit more breathing space between them and the Lightning in the battle for fourth spot on the ladder and a playoff position. With only 4 rounds remaining the Eagles hold a slim 5pt lead over the Lightning and the two teams are scheduled to clash in Round 16.

League Men –Ansett v Lightning

Lightning held off a late challenge from Ansett to claim bragging rights with a narrow 89-86 win that leaves them in top spot on the ladder after Round 14. Lightning held the lead at every change of quarter as they stopped the Blues winning streak at four in a row. Cameron Bailey was in fine form hitting 22 points followed by Harry Fuge on 18, Tom Godwin on 17 and Craig Martin on 10. The Blues put up a great fight with Matt Van Pelt getting a season high 29, Jake Feeney 18, Mitchell O’Donoghue 16, Tom Hunt 11 and Matteo Rowse 10. This was only the first time the two teams have met this season.

Razzle v Tracy Village Jets

Darrin Weetra spearheaded an attack on the Razzle as the Tracy Village Jets cruised to a 77-39 win, only their third of the season. As the Bombers struggle to make the final four, something unheard of in recent years, they have benefited by the return of Weetra who is a three point specialist that gives the Jets the added firepower needed to win games. Weetra hit a season high 35 points (including 8 treys) with big man Sam White adding 12. Nobody hit double figures for the Razzle with Eric Klenke and Ben Cowcher getting 8 each.

Uni Rebels v Palmerston

John King set a season and League high 41 points against Palmerston as the Uni Rebels rolled to a comprehensive 105-64 win that has a number of teams looking over their shoulders as the Rebels continue to climb the ladder. The win put the Rebels into fourth place on the ladder just a game ahead of the Power. The combo of King and Tim Morris is turning out to be a winning one as the duo keeps the Rebels running forward towards the playoffs. The Rebels blew the game wide open with a 29-9 second quarter run for a game winning 56-26 half time lead. The Power pulled a bit back in the third quarter during a 24-22 run, but the Rebels powered away in the last stanza with a 27-14 spurt to end the game. Morris hit 28 in support of King while Aaron Simpson and Tendayi Muyambi hit 12 each for the Power.
