League Men – Palmerston v Lightning

Lightning put a big crimp in the minor premiership aspirations of Palmerston with a huge 79-66 upset win that drops the Power a game back of the league leading Eagles. Cameron Bailey (16ppg) led the Lightning as he has for the better part of this seasons campaign with a game high 26 with support from Tom Godwin (17 @ 6.5ppg) and Tony Halikos (12 @ 7.2ppg). Lightning has been a threat all season long to knock off one of the frontrunners and they put it all together for this one even though they can’t make it into the playoffs. They can still play the spoilers for others. They jumped all over the Power in the first quarter with a 30-9 run ignited by the hustle off Godwin and Bailey. Then the Power hit their straps in the second quarter with a 30-16 run but still trailed 46-39 at the half. After the break the Lightning just went ahead with business by shutting down all Power challenges to outscore them 33-27 in the second half to claim just their fourth win of the season. Eruera McCullough (12.9ppg) led the Power with 19, Jesse Bell hit 17 @ 21ppg and Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson added 14 @ 19.3ppg. A disappointing loss for the Power and one they will not want to repeat with only three rounds left before playoffs.

Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

The Eagles will be breathing a little easier after dispatching arch-rival Tracy Village Jets with a hard fought 64-56 win. The Birds had to come from behind, again, to clinch the game, but they rolled along behind Louis Ilton (19ppg) who hit a season high 31 points for the match. A third quarter blitz by the Birds gave them the momentum they needed to run out winners. They outpointed the Bombers 22-8 to take a 49-43 lead into the last quarter and kept up the pressure to hold off the never say die Bombers. The Birds sealed the game with six straight points from the charity stripe. Travis Ellis (17ppg) led the Bombers with 16, Liam MacLachlan (9.7ppg) hit 12 and Alex Weetra (6.5ppg) had 11.

Razzle v Ansett

Daniel Florance lit the fire under the Blues of Ansett early in their game against the Razzle to lead them to a 78-45 victory, their 10th of the season. Florance hit a game high 27 points to maintain his league leading average of 22.7ppg and the lead in total points scored with 331. Support came from Matthew Barrett (9.1ppg) with 14 and Jake Feeney (8ppg) with 10. The Blues were off and running early to set up the win. The outscored the green and gold 23-8 in the first quarter and had built that up to a 40-20 half time lead. They powered away in the third quarter with a run of 22-8 and coasted the rest of the way for victory. Stalwart Robert Oliver (14.2ppg) led the Razzle with 11.

Ladder:                                           Eagles 13-3, Palmerston 11-4, Ansett 10-6, Tracy Village Jets 9-6, Uni Rebels 7-8, Lightning 4-11 & Razzle 0-16
