League Men –Lightning v Eagles

The League leading Eagles won a cliff hanger against the Lightning 79-78 to complete a clean sweep of their meetings this season. The Eagles had put themselves into a two point lead after Ernest Holmes had put back a rebounded shot with about 30 seconds to play for a 79-77 lead. Lightning got the ball up-court, but missed a shot giving the Birds possession with about 20secs remaining. The Eagles had the ball knocked out of bounds at about half court and on the ensuing pass into play Lightning’s Christian Williams stole the ball and was fouled while taking the ball to the rack. Williams made the first shot, missed the second which was rebounded by team mate Lem Jones who put it back up, but it rolled around the rim and fell out instead of in…giving the win to the Birds. The Eagles had built up a 49-41 half time lead behind the shooting of Sheppard and Buster Perkins (17.2ppg), but they both failed to repeat their good work in the second half as Lightning slowly scrambled back into contention. Cameron Bailey (15.3ppg) from Lightning led all scorers with a 26 point effort and he got plenty of support from Jones 14, Williams 12 and Tom Godwin 11. For the winning Eagles Sheppard (16.9ppg) finished with 20, Perkins 16, Joseph Johnson 15 and Louis Ilton 13.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Ansett continues to apply pressure to all 'top four' teams as they edged past the Uni Rebels in a nail-biter 71-68 to leap-frog past the Jets and the Power into second place on the ladder. The Rebels held a seven point lead at half time 35-28 due to the inspiring play of Matt Fagg (13.4ppg) and Matt Van Pelt, but the Blues tandem of Daniel Florance and John King set Ansett on the comeback trail in the third quarter as they outscored the Rebels 24-17 to knot up the scores at 52 all with a quarter to play. Ansett continued to forge ahead as the Rebels tried to regain the momentum, but it wasn’t to be as King (22ppg) stepped into the limelight again to hit 8 points in the quarter and looked on as the league’s top point scorer, Florance, finished off the game with a pair of free throws as time wound down for the Rebels. Florance (21.5ppg) top scored for the game with 27 and King had 21. Fagg led the Rebels with 20 and Van Pelt (14.1ppg) finished with 16. A very important game looms on the horizon for the Blues as they take on the Jets next Friday in the game of the week. Ansett is on a five game winning streak and have won seven of their last eight contests.

Tracy Village Jets v Razzle

The Tracy Village Jets have solidified their place in the top four after accounting for the Razzle 84-59. The green and gold hung around for the better part of the game, trailing by 10-11pts most of the time, but in the end the Bombers ran out easy winners. A break-out 29 point game from the Razzle’s James Panton (9.2ppg) kept them in touch, but a blistering 29-14 run in the last quarter by the Bombers ended any hope the Razzle may have had. Six of the seven Jets hit double figures with Travis Ellis (14.5ppg) leading the way with 17, Liam MacLachlan 15, Michael MacLean & Jayden Niven-Trewin 13 each and Sam White on 10. Alan Watson hit 14 and Robert Oliver (14ppg) added 13 towards the Razzle effort.

Ladder:                                              Eagles 11-2, Ansett 8-5, Tracy Village Jets 8-4, Palmerston 8-3, Uni Rebels 5-7, Lightning 2-9 & Razzle 0-12

Next Game Oct. 25th Round 16:    Ansett v Tracy Village Jets 6:15pm, Uni Rebels v Lightning 7:45pm & Razzle v Palmerston 9:15pm. Bye-Eagles
