League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

No mercy was shown by the Tracy Village Jets as they rolled over the Eagles for an 84-31 win, clearly showing their intent on taking out the Challenge Season Championship. Five players hit double figures during the encounter with Kylie Duggan (14.3ppg) nailing 19pts, Tikesa Docherty-Cole 17 @ 62% from the field, Tara Maxwell 14, Abby Cubillo 12 and Sam Rioli 10. Duggan and Maxwell (10.2ppg) complimented their points total by grabbing 19 rebounds apiece. The Bombers shot 38% from the field to the Eagles 20% and they (the Jets) took full advantage of 29 turnovers from the Birds by scoring 23 points from those miscues. Michelle Friel top scored for the Eagles with 11.

Ansett v Lightning

Ansett got back on track after last week’s loss to Rebels with a hard fought 56-52 win against Lightning that put them into sole possession of second place on the ladder with just three games remaining in the minor rounds. The Blues looked home and hosed with a 20 point lead after three quarters of play, but Lightning bolted back into contention by staging a heroic come-back that just failed at the end. Emma Carbone (9.4ppg) and Kelli Sealy (11.7ppg) combined for 18 last quarter points and almost led Lightning to victory. Lightning hit 5 treys in the last quarter (4 in a row at one stage) during a 25-8 run, but Sam Drescher (21.3ppg) hit a couple of shots that iced the game for the Blues. Drescher led all scorers with a game high 27 and Amelia Shanahan (15.6ppg) added 19 while Sealy finished with 17 for Lightning and Carbone 15.

Palmerston v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels powered out of the blocks at the start of their match against Palmerston with a 18-3 first quarter lead that proved to be more than enough to secure a 58-41 win. The Rebels also jumped into a tie with Lightning for third place on the ladder. Next week’s battle between the two should be a real cracker. The on-court presence of Jaylene Bonson (13.1ppg) lifted the Rebels to victory as the team continues to climb the ladder after looking like they were not going to make the playoffs a few weeks ago. Bonson (47% shooting) and Justine Schmidt (9.5ppg) hit 17 points apiece to lead the Rebels while Niina Hirvonen was the only Palmerston player to hit double figures with 10 (+13rebs). The Rebels hit 30% of their shots to just 21% for Palmerston.

Ladder:                              Tracy Village Jets 11-1, Ansett 7-5, Lightning & Uni Rebels 6-6, Eagles 4-8 & Palmerston 2-10

League Men – Eagles v Lightning

After last week’s one point win over the Rebels the Eagles were more convincing this week against Lightning, winning by a more comfortable margin of 78-66. Buster Perkins (19.6ppg) led the Eagle assault with 18pts, 12rebs and 5 assists. Tony Halikos (21 @ 12.6ppg) and Cameron Bailey (17pts & 15rebs) from Lightning kept the contest close with their good shooting in the first half, but the wheels fell off in the third quarter when Lightning allowed the Birds to go off on a 20-11 run for a 57-42 lead with a quarter to go. Try as they might Lightning (27% shooting) failed to overhaul the Eagles (40% shooting) as Perkins hit 10 of his total in the last frame with Joseph Johnson (14pts & 10rebs) and Jarrod Sheppard adding 9. Tom Godwin also had a double double for Lightning with 15pts & 11rebs. Two others in double figures for Eagles were Shane Harrison with 13 and Jesse Williams-Hook with 11pts & 11 boards.

Tracy Village Jets v Razzle

The Tracy Village Jets had all the answers against the Razzle in their easy 100-57 win last Friday night. Jayden Adams 7.5ppg) hit a season high 20 for the Bombers with four others in double figures. The Bombers took off in the first quarter with 7 different players contributing to a 23-10 run that led to a 46-29 half time lead. The Razzle had kept the game relatively close for the first half, but a third quarter run of 19-5 by the Bombers stopped the green and gold in their tracks and they never seriously challenged for the remainder of the game. Jet Phil Collins (15.1ppg) chipped in with 17, Jake Geer 16, and Daniel Miller & Liam MacLachlan 10 each. James Panton from Razzle hit 17, Robert Oliver 16 and Brendan Dell 10.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

The Blues of Ansett made sure the Uni Rebels remained just out of a playoff position, for the moment, with a comprehensive 98-51 victory that locks the Blues into a final four spot with just 3 rounds remaining. Ross Vasic (9.4ppg) and Daniel Florance (23ppg) did most of the damage for the Blues against the Rebels. Both players hit double doubles with Vasic on 28pts (8 treys) and 12rebs and Florance posting 27pts and 14 boards. Matt Hunt had a unique double with 14pts and 11 assists. A 30-10 first quarter put the Rebels on the back foot early and the Blues never let up. Michael Opara had 21 points while team mate Jermaine Lattimore had 19 plus 16 rebounds. The Blues hit 46% from the field and only had 6 turnovers to 21 for the Rebels.
