League Women –Lightning v Uni Rebels

Lightning got the better of the Uni Rebels in a close one, winning 60-56 despite a poor shooting night from the field. The Rebels actually shot better, hitting 38% from the field to Lightning’s 32, but Lightning made up for it from beyond the arc hitting 5 treys to the Rebels 1. Plus the Rebels need to spend more time working on their free throw shooting where they were 9/23 @ 39%. Brittany Ward (16ppg) led Lightning with a high of 19 points including 5 steals and 3 assists. Jacinda Lambert (17.8ppg) added a double-double with 14pts and 19 rebounds. Overall Lightning grabbed 48 boards to just 26 for the Rebels. The Rebels held the advantage at half time, leading 24-20, but after the break the momentum swung slowly in favour of Lightning as they hung in there to give themselves a chance at winning. Tahnee Lew Fatt hit a three pointer to tie the game up at 41 all with 8:56 left in the game and it was a see sawing battle until with 58 seconds left Ward hit a shot to give Lightning the lead for good at 58-56. With 21 seconds left Bonson (19 @ 15.8ppg) put up a shot that missed for the Rebels, Sarah Carbone grabbed the rebound for Lightning and during the next play phase Ward was fouled. Ward then hit two free throws to seal the game for Lightning. Tamara Sheppard hit 12 for the Rebels.

Ansett v Eagles

Ansett took advantage of poor shooting from the Eagles to carve out a 55-39 win that put them into sole possession of third place on the ladder. The Eagles hit a woeful 19% from the field to 35% from the Blues. Sam Drescher (21.4ppg) led the Blues again, from the front, with a game high 19pts, 18rebs, 5 assists and a couple of steals. Lauren Flanegan (9ppg) added 12 and Amelia Shanahan 10. The Eagles trailed 31-25 at the half and kept in touch until the last 7 minutes of the last quarter. Trish Graham (8 @ 13.2ppg) hit a three pointer to get the Eagles within 6 points at 43-37 at the 7:33 remaining mark, but the Birds did not score for the next 7 minutes while Ansett piled on the points during a run of 14 points to just 5 for the Eagles. The Eagles flew home in the last minute and a half of their game against the Uni Rebels to claim a nail biting 77-76 win and sole possession of fourth place on the ladder. The Rebels got a great lift out of returning American Michael Jones (Ex-Harlem Globtrotter) who put up a team high 21 for the Rebels and who also ignited the last quarter sprint that gave the Rebels a 76-71 lead with just 1:27 left to play. Jones hit a shot with 8:44 remaining as the Rebels charged out to the lead during a 16-11 run that stopped at the 1:27 mark. Eagle Buster Perkins then took charge, hitting a three at the 54 second mark followed by a two pointer with 35 seconds left to tie up the game at 76 all. Perkins (24.8ppg) then finished off the game with a shot from the charity stripe with 9 seconds left. Leading the way for the Eagles was Shonsdale Robinson (26ppg) with a game high 31 (plus 17 rebs) followed by Joseph Johnson (14.8ppg) with 22 (including 7 assists). Perkins finished up with 20, 6 assists and 4 steals. Supporting Jones (20ppg last year) was Justin Eckhardt (26.4ppg) with 20, Lachlan Headlam (16.5ppg) with 17 and Jarrod Sheppard (18ppg) with 10. Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Lightning claimed bragging rights over the Tracy Village Jets with an emphatic 90-66 win that put them into first place on the ladder, a spot they have rarely been in before. Zac White, Cameron Bailey and Jesse Bell combined for 71 points as they ran roughshod over the Bombers. Lightning hit 45% from the field and 36% (8/22) from outside the arc as they raced out to a 48-32 half time lead and never looked back. The Bombers charged back in the third quarter with a 21-15 run but that was erased in the last quarter when Lightning bolted again during a 27-13 run to put the game well and truly out of reach. White (20.1ppg) finished with a double-double adding 23 rebounds to go with a game high 30 points. Bailey (13.9ppg) hit 27 and Bell (16.5ppg) 14. The League’s leading scorer, Travis Ellis from the Jets (29.2ppg), hit a team high 22, but did not have a good shooting night, putting up 37 shots to do it (just 27% from the field).
