League Women –Uni Rebels v Ansett

The Uni Rebels had to stage a fight back to overcome a tenacious Ansett side bent on upsetting the defending champs Tuesday night at the DBA Stadium. The end result was a 68-58 win for the Rebels, but they had to work hard to achieve it. The return of League leading scorer Tamara Sheppard (28 @ 23.6ppg) made a world of difference to the Rebels who had lost a squeaker to the Eagles last week when Sheppard was unavailable for that game. The Rebels were down 26-23 at half time due to a good start from Ansett who were getting quality play from Victoria Uhlig (9.6ppg) in the keyway where she put up 15 first half points. Uhlig eventually finished with a season and team high 23. But the Rebels came out firing in the second half and slowly clawed their way back into the game, especially in the last quarter when they outscored the Blues 27-15 behind the inspirational play of Sheppard and Jaylene Bonson (9) who combined for 18 of the Rebels fourth quarter points. Amelia Shanahan and Kia Bond added 14 and 10 for the Blues while Jaylene Boundry put up 10 for the Rebels.

Eagles v Lightning

The Eagles took over sole possession of third place on the ladder with a workmanlike 65-44 win against Lightning. The Birds owned every quarter as the mother/daughter duo of Trish Graham (13ppg) and Michelle Friel (19.6ppg) tallied 41 between them (including 7 treys) to lead the Eagles to their sixth win of the season. Tahnee Lew Fatt kept the Eagles honest as she led a trio of Lightning double figure shooters trying to close the ever widening gap made by the Birds. Lew Fatt (6.5ppg) finished with a season high 16 followed by Chelsea Cook (10.2 ppg) with 12 and Sarah Hagen with 10.

Warriors v Tracy Village Jets

The Warriors failed to field a team for their game against the Tracy Village Jets, thereby forfeiting the game 20-0.

League Men – Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

Ansett blasted past the Tracy Village Jets 73-58 to claim a share of first place on the League ladder. The Blues and the Bombers have equal 8-2 records with the Jets holding the better record between them, having beaten the Blues 2 games out of 3 so far this season. Ansett flew out to a 41-24 half time lead behind the sharp shooting of Tom Blake (10.2ppg) who nailed 17 of his team high 21 in the first half. Matt Hunt (17.8ppg) was also pretty active throughout the game finishing with 16 while Matthew Barrett added 14 and Ross Vasic 13. The Jets picked up the pace in the second half, but never challenged the Blues who stiffened up their defense, particularly on the Bombers leading scorer Travis Ellis who was held to just 12 points, well below his average 27ppg. Leading the Jets was Dan East (10.6ppg) with 14 and Liam MacLachlan with 13.

Eagles v Warriors

The Eagles swooped past the Warriors 88-52 with another strong offensive display from three shooters, Charles Benning (32 @ 26ppg), Buster Perkins (19 @ 32ppg) and Joseph Johnson (12 @ 22.7ppg). A huge first quarter run of 24-8 set the tempo for the game and try as they might the Warriors just couldn’t make any inroads into the gap. At the half it was 44-22. Phil Collins (League leading 27.5ppg) continues to fill the hoop, tallying 18 to lead the Warriors with support from John Culbertson who chipped in with 12.

Lightning v Uni Rebels

Lightning dumped the Uni Rebels 75-61 to solidify their 4th place on the ladder, giving them a bit of breathing space after 10 rounds of play. A good start in the first quarter led by Cameron Bailey (20 @ 14.1ppg) set Lightning up with a handy 17-8 lead. They dropped a couple of points in the second quarter as the Rebels fought back during a 20-18 run that put them just seven points adrift at the half 35-28. A trio of treys during the run, between Jamie Hamill (13) and Jake Kirby (12), gave the Rebels a bit of a lift but it wasn’t quite enough. Jesse Bell (19.7ppg) found the range for Lightning in the second half, hitting 19 of his team high 24 and it was just enough to offset the second half highlights from Ryan Smith of the Rebels who hit 23 of his game and team high 28. Unfortunately for the Rebels Smith’s effort played a lone hand in their chase to overhaul Lightning.
