League Women –Ansett v Uni Rebels

Tamara Sheppard led the Uni Rebels to a narrow 53-49 win against third placed Ansett on Saturday night at the DBA Stadium. Sheppard (22.6ppg) was almost unstoppable, racking up an impressive 30 points in the victory. Both teams were missing a couple of their usual starters, but the match up still proved to be entertaining and close. Sheppard was the only Rebel in double figures, but her output proved to be the winning margin (including 13pts from the charity stripe). Victoria Uhlig (9.6ppg) top scored for the Blues with 13 and three other players hit 8pts each, but a letdown in the second quarter when the Rebels outscored them 13-7 proved their undoing.

Eagles v Lightning

After two straight losses the Eagles got back on the winning track at Lightning’s expense, winning 59-43 after a big fourth quarter by the Eagles finally put Lightning away. The teams battled it out tooth and nail for three quarters with the Eagles leading by a close 39-36 margin heading into the last quarter. The Eagles had led 30-21 at half time before Lightning put in a sustained attack led by Chelsea Cook (12 @ 12ppg) and Tahnee Lew Fatt (10.5ppg) who helped whittle down the Eagle lead to just 3 at the end of three quarters. However, the 4th quarter was all Black & Ochre as the Eagles regrouped to power past Lightning 20-7 for the win. Lillian Williams (10.8ppg) led the Eagles with a game and team high 21 while Elyse Videon (3.5ppg) added 14 (12 in a strong second half).

Warriors v Tracy Village Jets

Ladder leaders Tracy Village Jets romped past the luckless Warriors 96-45 for their sixth straight win of the competition. The Jets guards dominated the game, combining for 55 of the Jets total points. Sam Rioli (15.8ppg) led the charge with 21, Tikesa Docherty-Cole had 20 and Kylie Duggan (11ppg) hit 14. Georgii Howlett (20.2ppg), the Bombers stopper in the keyway tallied 16. The Warriors never really mounted a strong challenge, although they never gave up trying. Jennifer Kinsella (7.8ppg) was the only Warrior in double figures as she once again led the Warriors (14pts) in scoring.

Ladder:                               Tracy Village Jets 6-0, Uni Rebels 5-1, Ansett & Eagles 3-3, Warriors 1-5 & Lightning 0-6

League Men - Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The Tracy Village Jets set their sights squarely on the minor premiership with a devastating 93-72 win against their closest rivals Ansett. Danny Miller put the Jets in the air with three straight baskets to kick start a 24-18 first quarter run that blossomed out to a 55-33 point lead at the half way point after the Bombers bombed the Blues during a 31-15 second quarter run. Travis Ellis (23.7ppg) took control of the second quarter hitting 13 of his game high 33 (including 3 treys). After the second quarter point scoring spree the Jets never looked like losing the game, staying in complete control to win their sixth straight game. Miller (7.7ppg) finished up with 17 points as did Michael Maclean (15.7ppg) and Liam MacLachlan (14.2ppg) chipped in with 12. Jake Feeney (9.4ppg) took the scoring honour’s for the Blues with 18 followed by Matthew Barrett with 17, Matt Hunt (17ppg) with 16 and Corey Whitaker with 11.

Eagles v Warriors

The Eagles won their third game in a row with a solid 84-50 victory over the Warriors. Led by a league and season high 39 points from Joseph Johnson (23 in the 2nd half) the Eagles also grabbed a share of second place on the ladder with Ansett, whom they play next week. The Eagles dominated the first quarter as they shut down the Warriors offense, limiting them to just 3 points during an Eagle 21-3 run. Johnson (24ppg) hit 14 of his total in the quarter. The Warriors played catch up for the rest of the game, taking the third quarter 23-17, but by then all the damage had been done as they trailed 59-37 with only one quarter to play. Rob Oliver (7ppg) and Tendayi Muyambi (5.6ppg) led the Warriors with 18 and 11. Charles Benning (17.5ppg) added 11 in support of Johnson.

Lightning v Uni Rebels

Lightning added more woes to the Uni Rebel camp by squeaking past the Rebels 75-73 for their second win of the season. The recent revival of Lightning’s offensive attack has lifted them into sole possession of 4th place on the ladder and the addition of Tom Leonard (18) and Ben Streeter (14 @ 12.5ppg) has played a major part in that revival. After a close first quarter, 21-20 Rebels advantage, the Rebels charged off on a 24-11 run led by Rohan Cropley & Jamie Hamill (2 treys each in the quarter) to take a handy 45-31 half time lead. After the break, however, Lightning bolted out of the blocks for a 26-14 run that got them within 2 at the end of three quarters 57-59. From that point onward it was a battle for either team to break away for a clear victory. Leonard added the finishing touch with his last basket of the game, the one that gave Lightning a stirring 2pt win over last year’s champs. Cropley finished with a game high 22 (24ppg) and team mate Marcus Ch’ng hit 20 (22ppg). Cameron Bailey (11.5ppg) and Dylan De Santis added 14 and 10 for Lightning.

Ladder:                   Tracy Village Jets 6-0, Ansett & Eagles 4-2, Lightning 2-3-1, Warriors 1-5, Uni Rebels 1-2-3

Next Week:    Warriors v Lightning 6:15pm, Eagles v Ansett 7:45pm & Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets 9:15pm
