League Women –Warriors v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels celebrated Trish Graham’s 500th League game milestone by presenting her with an 89-53 win against the Warriors. Graham’s daughter Michelle Friel flew up from Perth to be on court for the game, contributing 16 points towards the winning effort as the Rebels posted their 10th win of the season. Jaylene Bonson also hit 16 points while Jamie Lee-Peris had 14 and Tamara Sheppard 13. Carolyn Nyhouse led all players with 21 points but the Warriors couldn’t match the firepower of the Rebels. Jennifer Kinsella added 11 to the Warrior cause. The Rebels left no doubt about their intentions after shooting out to a 31-14 first quarter lead. The 49-27 half time lead blew out to 71-41 after three quarters of play and the rout was on. Graham hit 7 points for the game bringing her career total to 5460, just 83 short of Karmi Dunn (5543) and 474 short of all time leader, Dahlia Docherty who has 5934.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

Tracy Village Jets earned a 55-42 win in a tough encounter with the Eagles, doing just enough to stay in front of the tenacious birds. The Jets held a slim 13-10 advantage after one quarter of play and slowly built on that lead from the charity stripe where they out-scored the Eagles 16-6. Three players hit double figures for the Bombers, Demi Cubillo (12), Kylie Duggan (11) and Gerogii Howlett (10). The win helped to maintain their first placed status on the competition ladder (tied with the Uni Rebels). Nobody from the Eagles hit a double, but everybody scored…Lillian Williams the best with 8.

Next Tuesdays game between the Jets and Uni Rebels will leave one team alone atop the ladder and will also be a probable Grand Final scenario.

Ansett v Lightning

Ansett remains firmly entrenched in third place on the ladder after a narrow 49-44 win against a determined Lightning team. Kelli Sealy and Sarah Carbone (12 each) made sure Ansett worked hard for the win as the duo combined for 24 points and almost led their team to a minor upset over the more fancied Blues. A big second quarter effort from Lightning held Ansett to just 4 points while Lightning went on to score 12 for a 22-17 half time lead. However, Sam Drescher racked up a game high 21 points for the Blues and with Kia Bond lifted the Blues back into the game during the second half as they slowly whittled down the Lightning lead before taking over in the last quarter. Lauren Flanegan added 9 points for the Blues with several treys.

Ladder:                               Tracy Village Jets & Uni Rebels 10-2, Ansett 9-3, Eagles &  Lightning 3-9 & Warriors 1-11

League MEN – Eagles v Uni Rebels

The three imports for the Uni Rebels combined for a total of 84 points as the Rebels clipped the Eagles 102-77. In a much anticipated clash between the two sides the outcome was a surprise in that the Rebels won so handily. Andre’ Moss hit 31, Zane Meehl 30 (12 in the first quarter) and Michael Jones 23 while their counterparts Buster Perkins & Larry Williams hit 29 and 28, but for the Eagles that was pretty much all the scoring they got. The Rebels closed down Eagles Henry Bui (2) and Joseph Johnson (5), two players who normally add double figures to the Eagle total. The Eagles now face a showdown with Ansett this Saturday while the Rebels take on the Jets as the top four in the competition battle for playoff places.

Warriors v Ansett

Ansett ran roughshod over the struggling Warriors 89-45 to stay atop the ladder in the men’s competition. The Warriors continue to find it difficult to score points and this game was another example of their lack of a consistent scorer. Ansett up the win with a dominant 22-10 effort in the first quarter and never looked back. Six players hit double figures for the Blues while the lone standout for the Warriors was Ben Muvirimi with 12. Rashad Chase led Ansett with 17 with Tom Hunt adding 15, Matt Hunt & Daniel Florance 14 each, Jake Feeney 11 and Jay Johnson 10. It is pretty hard to win a game against a shooting lineup like that. The Blues will have to be at their best on Saturday against the Eagles.

Lighting v Tracy Village Jets

Michael MacLean had to pull the rabbit out of the hat for the Tracy Village Jets as they just slipped by the fast finishing Lightning 74-70. Maclean (12) stole the show with three straight baskets to finish the game and finish off the surge by Lightning through the efforts of Jesse Bell. Bell finished with a team and game high 28, his highest tally for the Lightning in a number of years. He was supported by 13 from Dylan de Santis and 11 from Brodie Hertel, but the Jets had the better numbers with Travis Ellis hitting 26 and Liam MacLachlan 16. Trailing by 5 at halftime 41-36 Lightning closed the gap to just 2 at 60-58 with one quarter to play, but captain MacLean made sure of the Bomber win with his last three shots. Maclean’s 12 points leave him just two points shy of a career total of 7000! He is 5th all time.
