The Eagles celebrated Trish Graham’s 412th League game by sweeping the first round of games against all opponents in the DBA Championship Season. The Eagles bumped off the Razzle 49-38 for their sixth straight win in the competition.  Five players dropped points for the Eagles during a 15-5 first quarter run that set up the win.  Razzle tightened things up in the second quarter through the play of Annabelle Harbison (9) and Briana Grazioli (12) but they still trailed 14-25 at the half time break.  Greta Hollis (11), Leonie Snowdon and Michelle Friel (9) set the Eagles on a 15-9 run to give them a 40-23 lead at the end of three quarters.  Stevie Hammersmith hit the court running and lifted the Razzle with her enthusiasm and aggressive offence in the last quarter as the green and gold finished off the game on a high note, outscoring the Eagles with a 15-9 run.

Tracy Village Jets powered away from Ansett in the last 4 minutes of their game for a 46-35 win and a share of second place on the ladder.  Jet Jenna Lew Fatt (15) and Samantha Drescher (19) from Ansett engaged in an entertaining shooting match throughout the first half that ended with the Jets holding sway 25-19.  Ansett patiently wormed their way back into contention by the end of the third quarter, trailing 31-28.  It took a few minutes for either team to score in the last quarter, but it was Kate Hoschke (13) from Ansett who put the game on a razors edge when she dropped in three points with just over 4 minutes remaining to tie the game up at 31 all.  A time out by coach Cain Muir for Tracy Village seemed to have the desired effect as they flew past Ansett on a 15-4 run led by Tikesa Docherty-Cole and Desiree Weetra (13) who played the fast break game to a ‘T’ for the Jets win.

Uni Rebels had to wait until the closing minutes of the last quarter to register a hard fought 44-33 win against the pesky Warriors.  The two Jaylene’s did most of the damage for the Rebels.  Jaylene Bonson (11) and Jaylene Boundry (10) led from the front, combining for 15 pts in the first half, pushing transition at every opportunity and nailing their shots when needed most to give the Rebels a 25-18 half time lead.  Rebecca Cox orchestrated a third quarter Warrior revival with some accurate full court passes to Amanda Ruxton and Ashleigh Church as the Maroons put in a 11-6 run that got them within 2pts at 29-31 with a quarter to go.  Boundry opened up the fourth quarter with a three pointer and the Rebels were off and running, outscoring the Warriors 13-4 to wrap up their third with and a piece of second place on the ladder.

Men

The Tracy Village Jets racked up win number five with a 95-51 walloping of Ansett.  At the forefront of the Jets was non other than Travis Ellis (27.4ppg) who hit the Jets first 10pts on his way to a game high 34.  His support group was pretty impressive too with Clinton Kononen hitting 21 and every other team member, apart from one hitting double figures.  Matt Hunt (15), Jake Feeney and Paul Johnson (7ea) made the most of their chances at both ends of the court, but struggled to put the ball in the hoop against the relentless defensive pressure of the Jets.

The Warriors picked up their third consecutive win, 89-57 against the Uni Rebels, and welcomed back point guard Timmy Duggan who showed he can still drain the three when needed.  The Warriors now pack a one-two punch with two bona fide point guards in Duggan (16) and Jim Cochran (27 @ 24.6ppg) who led the way with another stellar performance.  Cochran put up 15 of the Warriors 29 first quarter points as they shut down the Rebels, holding them to only 8pts.  A 17-10 second quarter gave the Warriors an almost insurmountable 46-18 half time lead.  Credit to the Rebels however, as they played the Warriors almost even during the second half with Simon (18) and Jamie Hamill (11) and Jason Alber (13) stepping up to the challenge even though it was destined to fall short.

The Eagles won on a forfeit from Razzle who failed to field a starting five.

Ladder:            Tracy Village Jets 5-0, Eagles 4-2, Warriors & Ansett 3-2, Lightning 2-3, Razzle Storm 1-4 & Uni Rebels 0-5

Next Week:            6:30pm Razzle v Warriors, 7:45pm Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels & 9pm Ansett v Lightning, bye: Eagles
