League Women - Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The Tracy Village Jets made short work of the Uni Rebels in their 65-39 victory. Tania Dhu led the Jets with 19 points as they put their train back on the tracks after two consecutive losses. The Jets raced away to a 32-22 half time lead, kicked it up to a 51-27 advantage after three quarters and cruised home with the win. Kylie Duggan chipped in with 13 and Leah Seden added 11 to the Jets cause. Tiayana Sing was the only Rebel to hit double figures with 10…Danielle Ponter hit 9.

Razzle Storm v Eagles

The Eagles flew through the Razzle Storm to record a big 75-38 win as the Friel sisters combined for 44 of the Birds points. Ieasha Friel hit a game high 23 and sister Michelle hit 21 as the Eagles slowly but surely built up a sizeable lead (43-25 at three quarter time) before blowing away the Storm with a huge 32-12 last quarter run. April Rummery Lamb also hit double figures for the Birds with 10. Erin Boyd had 11 and Lailani Triffitt 8 for the Storm.

Lightning v Palmerston Power

The Lightning surged home in Overtime to beat the Palmerston Power 54-53 for their first win of the season. The Lightning held a 33-26 lead after three quarters of play, but the Power launched a spirited attack early in the last quarter to get back into the game with just 6 minutes remaining at 37-34. From then on the sides traded basket for basket as the quarter wore down before the Lightning’s Ashlee Walsh hit a free throw to knot up the scores at 46 each to end regulation time. In the overtime Kira Pendlebury & Peta Bailey from Lightning hit back to back baskets for an early 4 point lead, but the Power fought back behind Sarah Joy Carbone and Natalie Cocks. With just 41 seconds left Cocks hit a trey to tie up the game at 53 all and it was left to Hanna Turnbull from the Lightning to seal the win from the charity stripe with one made free throw. Pendlebury led the Lightning with 16, Bailey had 9 and Rebecca Thorne 8. Cocks led the Power with a game high 18 while Louise Turner & Mikaella Desamito had 12 apiece.

   Round 5

League Men – Essington Cannons v Ansett

Robert Skinner & Jerron Jamerson scored 59 points between them to lead Ansett to a comprehensive 98-79 win against the Essington Cannons. Neither side could gain much of an advantage in the first half, but the Blues did manage to hold a 45-43 point lead at the break. The third quarter changed the whole complex of the game with the Blues running up 29 points to just 16 as they began to pull away from the Cannons. The Blues held a 74-59 lead with just a quarter to play, but it proved to be enough as they outscored the Cannons 24-20 for the win. Skinner hit 30, Jamerson 29, Jai O’Shaughnessy 19 and Matt Haniford 16. Travis Ellis (23.2ppg) led the attack for the Cannons with 20, Deola D’Brown & Lachlan Shipway 18 each and Fisto Bizima 11.

Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

Tim Morris hit a game high 31 points and Coleman Spencer 22 as the Uni Rebels rolled over the Tracy Village Jets 91-65 for their third win of the competition. The Jets had taken a surprising 41-34 lead at half time thanks to a solid team effort. However, the third quarter proved to be a turning point favouring the Rebels as they outgunned the Jets 27-14 to take the lead at the end of three 61-55. The fourth quarter was a disaster for the Jets as they were held to just 10 points by the Rebels who hit 30. Morris (28.7ppg) and Coleman (23.5ppg) were backed up by Jake Kirby with 19 and Mitchel Garton with 10. Darrin Weetra (16.7ppg) hit a team high 20 for the Jets with Joel Stevens on 15.

Lightning v Palmerston Power

The Palmerston Power were saved from defeat by a last second shot from Willie Shackleford that got them home 77-76 over the Lightning. The Power looked to be cruising to another win when they led at the half 50-39, looking pretty comfortable, and were still ahead at three quarter time 67-53. But, the Lightning staged a fightback in the last quarter and almost stole the show. Led by Jesse Bell, Dylan De Santis and Cameron Bailey the Lightning outscored the Power 23-10 and were on the verge of winning with just 3 seconds remaining. Bailey had hit a trey with 3 seconds to go to put the Lightning up 76-75 and the Power immediately called Time Out. On the ensuing inbounds Shackleford got the ball and hit the game winning basket as time expired. Heart stopping stuff! Shackleford & Tom Godwin finished with 22 apiece and Ben Streeter hit 17 (5 treys). Bell led the Lightning with a game high 28, De Santis hit 13, Craig Martin 11 and Bailey 10.

Razzle Storm v Eagles

The Eagles stayed aloft on top of the ladder with a 5-0 record after defeating the Razzle Storm 79-71. Eagle Jordan Sing proved to be the catalyst in the third quarter. The Birds had to overcome a six point first quarter deficit (17-23) as the Razzle threatened to run away with the game. They hit 5 treys in the first quarter…3 of them by Jeremy Baden in less than two minutes to start the game. The Birds then settled in the second quarter with ‘JJ’ Joseph Johnson hitting 10 of his 21 points as they went on a 18-12run to tie the game up at 35 all at the break. The third quarter, however, demoralized the Storm as Jordan Sing almost single handedly tore them apart. In a five minute stretch the Birds outscored the Storm 19-0 and 15 of those points were from Sing, 13 of them were consecutive. With a quarter to go the Eagles were up 62-47. The Storm put together a 24-17 last quarter run, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Eagles.
