League Women - Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

The defending champion Tracy Village Jets got their season off and rolling with a very convincing 70-31 win over the Lightning. The opening game of the League competition was almost over before it started as the Jets jumped out to a 17-8 first quarter lead, bumped it up to 28-16 at half time and continued on in the same vein for the remainder of the game. The Jets kept the Lightning to single digits in every quarter. Erin Geer led the charge for the Jets with 15 points, Kylie Duggan hit 14 and Tikesa Docherty-Cole had 13. For the Lightning Dominique Carbone tallied 13 with Kira Pendlebury on 7. The Jets hit 17 points from the charity stripe.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

The high flying Eagles dumped last season’s runners-up Uni Rebels 68-38 to start their Championship season campaign on a high note. The addition of three former Rebels players helped the cause and will give the Eagles a bit more depth if they are to challenge the Jets. The young Rebels were no match for the more experienced Eagles as the Birds raced away to a 30-16 half time lead and never looked back. Ieasha Friel led the Birds with 23, Tulahah Jeffrey 15 and Alysha-Marie Williams 11. Tiayana Sing took scoring honours for the Rebels with 13 and veteran Chantell Lee added 11.

Palmerston Power v Ansett

Ansett knocked off the Palmerston Power 75-64, but it sure looked like the Power were going to run away with the game after a 16-2 first quarter start. The Blues didn’t look like they wanted to be in the game, but they picked up in the second quarter to trail by 13 at 31-18 at half time. They finally got into a groove in the second half, outscoring the Power 57-33 to run home lucky winners. Newcomer Tal Yakov hit a team high 25, Clancy Dorman 16 and Olivia Hatzismalis 16 to lead the Blues while Brittany Ward nailed 25 for the Power with Louise Turner adding 20 and Christine West 12. Both teams showing off a bit of offensive fire power.

Men

League Men – Razzle Storm v Essington Cannons

The newest team entered into the League competition, Essington Cannons, jump-started their season with a 99-83 victory over the Razzle Storm. The Storm were off and running early as they built up a narrow 15-12 first quarter lead as the teams got the feel for each other. After a few choice words from coach Alex Hamriding the Cannons put it all together in the second quarter behind Fisto Bizima and Jake Eyles and blew past the Storm with a 34-15 run to take a 46-30 half time lead. The Storm blew back into the game behind Fred Williams who hit 5 treys during a 22pt outburst in the third quarter to get the Storm within 13pts of the Cannons, but the writing was on the wall and the closest the Storm got after that was 10. The Cannons proving too good on the night. Bizima finished with 34 for the Cannons with Travis Ellis & Lachlan Shipway hitting 18 each and Eyles 17. Williams hit a game high 37 for the Storm while Chris Mahlstedt had 16, Daniel Calcatera 11 and James Rudolph 10.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

The Lightning put a w into the column with an 87-73 win over the Tracy Village Jets. The addition of Jesse Bell & Shaquile Hohipa-Wilson from Palmerston definitely had an impact on the Lightning’s team dynamics. The Lightning grabbed an early first quarter 23-15 advantage and never were headed despite the never-say-die attitude of the Jets. By half time the lead was 10 points at 45-35 with Bell and Hohipa-Wilson peppering the hoop from everywhere. The closest the Jets got was 5 points after Tim Friend hit a bucket to bring the score to 65-60 with 8:21 left in the game. Bell finished with a game high 27, Hohipa-Wilson 21 and Cameron Bailey 12. Joel Stevens hit 17 for the Jets with Jake Geer on 15 and Jayden Adams 12. Lightning hit 11 treys to 6 for the Jets.

Palmerston Power v Ansett

Thirty-eight points from Jerron Jamerson powered Ansett past the Palmerston Power 105-59 to open their account for the season. And Jamerson had ample help from three other players in double figures as they rolled over the Power from go to woe. The first quarter was a 30-14 run for the Blues and by half time they were way out in front 53-30 and they were definitely pulling away. The Power just didn’t have enough fire power to stay with the Blues. The loss of Jesse Bell & Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson to the Lightning in the off season left a big dent in the scoring capabilities of the Power. Backing up Jamerson were James Toohey with 15, and Robert Skinner & Mitch O’Donoghue with 13 each. Ben Streeter led the Power with 14 and Liam Napier had 12.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

A torrid fourth quarter fightback by the Eagles saw them steal a 79-76 win over last season’s champs the Uni Rebels. The Eagles found themselves trailing by 15 points at halftime and facing an uphill battle. At the start of the fourth quarter they still trailed by 13 and not too many spectators would have given them much of a chance, but they dug deep and followed the lead of hot handed Anthony Golden who hit 19 points in the quarter…6 in the last 29 seconds to win the game. Golden finished up with a game high 36 followed by James Smith (13), Jesse Williams-Hook (11) and David Oats (10). The Rebels were paced by Tim Morris with 30, Jake Kirby on 20 and S. Coleman 17.
