The Solomon Island Basketball Federation has been inactive for the past eight years due to the committee and the executive members never committed to the association. The worse came when the country experienced the height of the ethnic tension which has total colapse to the game of basketball for almost two years.

New initiative was done by the Oceania Basketball Confederation which they had directed Mr. Golden Kiloko, which is now the National Basketball Development Officer of Solomon Island for calling of fresh election for the Solomon Island Basketball Federation on the 1st March 2001, and new committee members were elected to form the Solomon Island Basketball Federation (SIBF).

Despite of all the problems we faced and the hard times we had experienced during the ethnic tension which hammer the development of basketball, we were able to send a Men`s team to the 5th Oceania Basketball tournament which was held in Fiji on the 23rd June to 9th July 2001. It was our first mission and part of the SIBF 5 years basketball development plan. We were very fortunate that our Men`s team won the second division first prize, the MERVE EMMS SHIELD. It was a first time ever Solomon Island won such an award, which was boost the game of basketball in Solomon Island.

The Federation had employed a full time national basketball development officer, he is Golden Kiloko. He is also a only FIBA badge referee in the region apart from Australia and New Zealand. The NBDO postion is part of the Oceania Basketball Confederation and National Olympic Committee of Solomon Island in developing the game of basketball in the country.

The SIBF had work very closely with the Goverment, NGOs, Aid donors and funding scheme in the development of basketball on some its basketball proposal project in constructing of out door basketball courts in schools in and around Honiara, Communities, Provinces and Honiara.

The NBDO had worked on implimenting the SIBF 5 years development program and had achieved some of the plans through the help of many volunteers.

The President of SIBF Mr. Michael Chan had resign as a President a week before the Solomo Island contingent left to Fiji for the SPG and he informed his resignation to the Secretary General of the Oceania Basketball Confederation Mr. Steve Smith at the South Pacific Games.
