Solomon Islands schools students improve on basketball skills

High school students in and around Honiara are benefiting from the latest set of skills program presented and demonstrated by local basketball development officer, Mr. David Moses Kivo.

Since the inception of the Honiara Basketball Association (HBA) High School basketball competition this year, competing schools in the Capital have been going through basic introductory lessons that focus on fundamental skills required to participate well during their competition.

“I have been going around schools to show basic drills and guidelines for students in order for them to carry out during their own training sessions” David said.

“The response so far is very encouraging and as the competition has progressed there are positive signs of improvement in the way these young people are playing” he added.

Supported by the Solomon Islands Basketball Federation (SIBF), SI NBDO David is keen on extending his program to coincide with other health and social group programs. His idea is to pass on positive messages to the young children about the benefits of healthy life style, good sportsmanship and positive particiaption.

So far more than 100 students have attended David’s after school sessions, and he is planning to incorporate some of the programs for the school PE teachers and basketball coaches.
