2011 IP&E Shell NBL concludes
The finals of the 2011 IP&E Shell NBL was an exciting match between the 2010 defending champions Peleliu Islanders and the 2011 season top ranking team Peched Raw (1 loss entire season). Both teams won their single elimnation quarter finals match ups easily and cruised through the best of 3 semi-finals securing their bid for the best of 3 finals. In game 1 Peched held a confortable 24 point halftime lead, however the defending champions two runs in the 3rd and 4th quarter but came in short and lost the game by a final score of 81-88. Game 2 was a different story as the Islanders came out strong and had a comfortable 17 point lead by the end of the 3rd quarter, Team Peched came back in the 4th quarter with an 22 point run of their own to finish off the Islanders and winning the 2011 IP&E Shell NBL Finals championships. Peched was also the 1st team to get 3 championships under their belt since 2001, and earned the rights to own the coveted IP&E Shell NBL Abai Trophy designed by Ling Inabo of Tebang Wood Carvings in 2001 (Total price then $800.00 - Now "Priceless).
8th Belau Games 2011
Basketball features 10 men and 7 women teams. 2009 Belau Games Defending Champions Koror opened the tournament with a resounding win over Team Ngardmau by a score of 112-49 and has a 2-0 record to lead the mens division Pool A, while 2009 Belau Games 2nd runner up Team Peleliu won over Team Sonsorol 88-62 in their opening match and has a 3-0 record in Pool B. In the women division 2009 defending champions Peleliu leads in the standings with a 3-0 record fallowed by Koror with a 2-1 and Ngeremlengui 2-1. Six games a day are held at the Palau National Gym starting at 9:00 am in the moring and finishing at 9:00 pm at night.
16 YEARS MEN ALL STAR TEAMS NAMED
The four All Star Teams from the 16 Years and Under Men’s KSHL to play in the 16 Years Super League scheduled for 25th to 29th July have been named. These All Star Teams feature many of the players who competed in the recent M15BT for Palau as well as some rising stars. Thoughout the Super League players will be identified for next year’s 17 and Under National Squad from which a team shall be selected to compete in the M17BT in Saipan.
KSHL CHAMPIONSHIP TO NGERMID RIVALS
Following two entertaining semi finals on Friday, it was Ngermid Rivals and Meda that faced off for the Championship game in the KSHL 16 Years and Under Men’s League on Saturday. In a frenetic paced game that had both team’s supporters threatening to lift the roof off the gym, Ngermid managed to get an early lead that they maintained throughout to win by 90-81.
4TH JULY 3 ON 3 TOURNAMENT
The US Airforce CAT Team conducted a 3 on 3 Tournament at the Palau National Gymnasium on Monday 4th July to celebrate the USA Independence Day. The morning session was for players aged under 18 years and the afternoon was for players over 18 years. The tournament was attended by USA Ambassador Ms Helen Reed Rowe.
KSHL U16 REACHES FINALS
Peched Reds finished in first place in the standings to make it to the semi finals but not without some worry as they lost to both Meda and Ngermid in the second round to ruin their unbeaten record. After losing to Ngermed Rivals in yesterday’s final game they now meet them again in today’s 1st semi final at 2.00pm. In the second semi at 4.00pm second place Meda will play against Echang South Coast. These four teams are all capable of beating each other so the semi finals will most likely go right down to the wire in each game.
CLOSE GAMES IN KSHL 16 AND UNDER
After 2 days of competition we have seen some close games and good competition. Peched Reds remain undefeated to date and look the likely team to beat. Meda sit in second place after going down in a close game yesterday to Peched Reds. Teams should note some changes to games on Friday and Saturday due to advice of a power outage on Friday.

The KSHL 16 Years and Under League started yesterday with 6 teams competing for bragging rights this year. Several of the players have just completed a grueling week with the M15BT and hopefully will display some of the things learned this past week.

M15BT VOTED A HUGE SUCCESS
Comments collected from coaches at the inaugural Micronesian 15 Years and Under Basketball Tournament in Palau qualify the tournament as a big success. In addition the coaches praised the organization of the tournament and the tournament staff. The visiting teams were also very appreciative of the standard of accommodation and the staff at their hotels.
M15BT GUAM WOMEN AND MEN TAKE GOLD
The Gold Medal game for men was a thriller between Guam and Palau and was the best game of the tournament, worthy of a final. In the women’s Gold Medal game Guam easily accounted for CNMI after initial resistance from the ladies in blue. The finals were followed by the medal awards and All Star Five for men and women. The closing ceremony was short and appreciated by all after such tiring week. Congratulations to all teams and their coaches for such a wonderful week of basketball.

And then there were two! Finalists for women are Guam and CNMI while Guam and Palau will battle for gold in the men’s division. Guam women had an easy victory over Belau while CNMI comfortably accounted for Palau. Guam men were always in control in their victory over CNMI and Palau led from start to finish over Guahan.
M15BT DAY THREE
Yesterday’s mens division was more like “The Brothers Show” with Guam men defeating their countrymen, Team Guahan, while Palau men had the better of their brothers in Team Belau. In the other games CNMI women beat Belau and Guam women accounted for Palau. Today it is semi final day. In the women’s division Guam play Belau and CNMI take on Palau. The men’s division will see Guam meet up with CNMI while Guahan will play Palau.

After the first day of competition all teams have been able to see their opposition and so coaches were focused on styles of play and counter measures. Guam continued on their winning way with the men defeating Palau by 38 points and their women annialating Belau. CNMI also had a good day with both their men’s and women’s teams beating Belau teams. Today sees the final rounds and teams are now setting their sights on the semi finals for Thursday.
M15BT DAY ONE
Guam teams have come well prepared to win the Micronesian 15 Years and Under Basketball Tournament here in Palau. After day one it is obvious that the Guam men’s team and the Guam women’s teams will be hard to beat this week. Winners on day one in the men’s division were Guam, Guahan and Palau (twice) while in the women’s division Guam and Palau both had wins.
M15BT OPENING CEREMONY
The inaugural Micronesian 15 Years and Under Basetball Tournament was opened last night in Koror, Palau in true island style of friendliness and fun. Teams from Belau, CNMI, Guam and Palau women paraded alongside men’s teams from Belau, CNMI, Guahan, Guam and Palau. The opening ceremony was also attend by many dignatories including PNOC President and PBF President Mr Frank Kyota, Senator Regis Akitaya and several Micronesian Legislators attending the annual Association of Pacific Island Legislators (APIL) Conference in Palau.
NATIONAL 15 AND UNDER TEAMS NAMED FOR M15BT
The two Men’s and Women’s Teams to represent Palau in this year’s Micronesian 15 Years and Under Basketball Tournament (M15BT), to be held here in Palau from Monday 20th to Saturday 25th June, were named today by PBF Vice President Mr Kasuki “Topps” Sungino. Following the naming of the teams the players and coaches were addressed by Ms Baklai Temengil, Secretary-General of the Palau National Olympic Committee (PNOC).
JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT SQUAD NAMED
The Basketball Palau Junior Development Squad for 2011 was named following the KSHL 12 and Under Super League Championship Game on Friday. The Junior Development Squad is part of the NDP (National Development Program) of Basketball Palau and is the starting point for future national squad selections. Players to the Junior Development Squad are selected from the under age competitions of 12 years and younger.

The KSHL 12 and Under Super League the Championship Game lived up to all expectations of a highly competitive and exciting game. In overtime it was Team A that clinched the victory in the final seconds over Team D. In the Consolation Final Team C managed to outlast Team B in another very good game.
12 AND UNDER SUPER LEAGUE HEATS UP
The KSHL 12 and Under Super League has reached the semi final stage with All Star Team A and All Star Team D looking the likely finalists on Friday afternoon. There have been some classic games through the rounds with none better than the clash between Team D and Team A that went to overtime on Tuesday before Team D were able to achieve victory by 70-66.
WALLACE TOPS ALL POINTS SCORERS IN 12 AND UNDER
Team Ngeremchai Central A’s prolific point scorer, Wallace Worswick, amassed an amazing 176 points in 10 games in the 12 and Under KSHL. But Wallace was not just a point scorer as he learned to pass off to his smaller team mates on many occasions to allow them to score. Six players scored 100 points and more during the league.
NGERCHEMAI A WIN 12 AND UNDER CHAMPIONSHIP
As expected Team Ngerchemai Central A won the KSHL 12 Years and Under Championship yesterday but not without a fright from Meda Kids A in the final quarter. Leading by 63-47 at the last change, Ngerchemai supporters were looking at an easy win but Meda came back with a 19 points to 10 run in the 4th quarter to give their supporters much hope. The 12 Years League finished on a high note and all agreed that this inaugural league has seen tremendous improvement in standard from day one to the end.

The Etpison Cup - 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament was held on Sunday with 8 teams participating. While the weather was very wet at times, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players. The Etpsion Cup is an annual fishing derby and supports several other sports such as basketball, volleyball and canoeing. This was the 21st year of the Etpison Cup.

The 2011 season of the IP&E NBL (National Basketball League) opened this and will see 10 teams in action through the double round robin series that will go through until July. Due to the M15BT in June and the Belau Games in July, the season will have some breaks that will extend it through until the end of July.
WALLACE CONTINUES TO RACK UP THE POINTS
In the ongoing KSHL 12 Years and Under League, Ngerchemai Central A player, Wallace Worswick, continues to pile on the points in each game and after just 6 games already has amassed 106 points at an average of 17.67 per game. Much of the success of the Ngerchemai Central A team being undefeated so far is due to Wallace’s extra height and athleticism. The KSHL 12 and Under League continues to provide some outstanding play and exhilerating moments.
KSHL 16 YEARS LEAGUE STARTING SOON
The next league to commence in the KSHL series of competitions will be for 16 years and under men and women. Team entries are now being received by the Hamlet Representatives and will close on June 1st. Players who are born on or after the 1st January 1995 are eligible to participate.
SAVANAH AWARDED SECOND CERTIFICATE
Savanah Giramur has been awarded her second certificate for improved performance in the National 15 Years Women’s Squad this month. Along with Savanah, Tanisha Alexander was also awarded an improvement certificate for the month of May. In the Men’s Squad two players also received certificates in Colbert Etpison and Oscar Page. This week featured some closer games as teams settled into the league. Ngerchemai B managed to defeat South Coast 40-35, Ididers B 26 just got home against Peched Red 22 while Meda had another close game against Meyuns to win 48-41.
KSHL 12 YEARS COACHES DAY IN THE SCHEDULE
The KSHL 12 Years and Under schedule was interupted yesterday by a “Coaches Day in the Schedule”. All teams and their coaches particpated in a clinic conducted by the NDC (Natiopnal Director of Coaching) where coaches were shown drills for teaching basic offensive and defensive skills and then took their players to the court to conduct these. The players showed a willingness to learn and many players quickly adopted some of the skills. It is hoped that these skills will start to be seen as the league continues.

After just 4 games in the KSHL 12 Years and Under League, some teams are already showing improvement and some future stars are emerging. In yesterday' game between Peched Reds and Ididers A, it was the Peched team that showed the benefit of some very good coaching by young up and coming coach, Cullen Carlson. Executing some very good man to man defence and patient and well executed offence, the Peched Reds took the Ididers team apart to the score of 42-24.

NATIONAL JUNIOR PLAYERS EXCELL IN LATEST FITNESS TEST
In their 3rd fitness test of the current program, several players in the National Mens 15 Year’s Squad achieved excellent results in many of the tests. For the Women’s Squad it was only their second test in the program and this provided coaches with some comparison to review the overall conditioning program.
KES IS CHAMPION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR 2011
The Koror Elementary School (KES) is the 2011 Champion Elementary School for basketball. The KES Stars won the elementary girls and came 3rd in the elementary boys competition. The Seventh Day Adventist Elementary School and GB Harris Elementary School tied for second place and Meyuns Elementary School came 4th.

SHELL ABL TEAM RANKINGS
Team Idid 4x4 Wheelers waxed hot from the opening tip off to gain the upper hand to beat team Rivals , 95-80 to close their series in the ongoing 2011 season of the Shell Amateur Basketball League (ABL) at the Palau National Gymnasium. Story by Peter Erick Magbanua, Island Times
GBH SMUUCH WINS ESC CHAMPIONSHIP
The GBH Smuuch team overcame a half time deficit to beat SDA Kings in a thriller in the 2011 ESC Elementary Boy’s Championship on Fiday. The Kings, who were last year’s champions, came ready to defend their title and this they did valiantly with good half court pressure defence, however the Smuuch team played with lots of patience in the final quarter to come away with a 78-75 win. In the Consolation Final on Thursday it was KES A Stars who defeated last year’s finalists Meyuns Dolphins in another thriller by 52-51.
SMUUCH AND KINGS GO TO ESC CHAMPIONSHIP
The GBH Smuuch team and the SDA Kings have advanced to the ESC Elementary Boy’s League on Friday after winning their respective semi finals this week. KES A and MES Dolphins will meet in the Consolation Final on Thursday.

NATIONAL COACHING POSITIONS AVAILABLE
The current National Men’s and Women’s Coaches have ended their 2 year term and these positions are now being advertised for the next 2 year period from 2011-2013. Ending their term are National Men’s Head Coach Johnny Kintaro and Assistant Coach Yutaka Gibbons Jr. For the National Women’s Squad, Head Coach George Domingo and Assistant Coaches Logan Ngiriou and Happy Fritz have guided them through the past 2 years. With the experience gained in the NDP it is hoped that these coaches will still be applicants for the upcoming positions.
NATIONAL COACHING PANEL MEETS
The NCP (National Coaching Panel) held its monthly meeting this week to review the NDP (National Development Program). The NCP is responsible for making recommedations to the NPC (National Program Committee) on the content and direction of the NDP. The NPC is responsible for the achievement of all parts of the NDP.
TAIWAN NAVY VISITS PALAU AGAIN
The Taiwan Navy was in Koror again last week and played an ABL representative team at the National Gym on Friday afternoon. As always on their visits the atmosphere in the gym was great with the Navy band members making noise and lots of cheering going on. In the end the Palau team won by 78-51.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL'S BOY’S LEAGUE REACHES FINALS
The first semi final will feature first ranked GBH Smuuch against fourth ranked KES A and in the second semi it will be second ranked SDA Kings facing up to third ranked MES Dolphins. On Friday MSS Sea Stars took 5th position for this year by defeating KES B by 48-36.

ABL RANKING SERIES INTO SECOND WEEK
The finals series of the ABL enters its second week as teams from each pool play-off for ranking positions prior to the single elimination tournament to decide the champion team for 2011. Already Ka’bong and Meda Boyz have decided the top two positions with Ka’bong handing the boys from Medalai defeat in their two games. The losing teams from last week must win their game this week to force the series into a third game.

FBL UNDER WAY FOR 2011
The 2011 FBL season got into full swing on Sunday with the first full day’s play following the opening ceremony the previous Sunday. Eight teams saw action in the day’s play with Jaguar, Mam’l Divers Rangers, Guardians and Ilocandia Bulls all recording victories.

GAMES SUSPENDED FOR COACHING COURSE
Basketball Palau has suspended all ABL and WNBL games this week to conduct a Level 1 Coaching Course for the coaches in these leagues. The decision to suspend games before the finals was taken to provide time for coaches to attend the course in their busy basketball schedule. Some 16 coaches are currently attending the course.
THE FILIPINO BASKETBALL LEAGUE OPENS UP FOR SEASON 2011
The 2011 FBL (Filipino Basketball League) had its opening ceremony for season 2011 on Sunday and in their usual fashion the FBA (Filipino Basketball Association) made it another spectacle for all fans to attend. All 11 teams paraded in full uniform accompanied by their muses, with Ilocoandia Bulls winning best uniform and Western Union taking out the best muse.
WNBL ROUNDS NEARING COMPLETION

ABL FINALS SERIES ANNOUNCED
The finals series of the ABL will take on a different shape this year to accommodate more games for teams and to try to get some eveness between the pools for the finals. Teams have been ranked within their pools according to their final team standings and each team will play the same ranked team in the other pool in a best of 3 series to decide a final ranking of all teams in the Team Ranking Round.
AIRAI STATE YOUTH DAY TOURNAMENT
Airai State held a 3 day basketball tournament this past weekend to celebrate Youth Day in Palau (Youth Day is March 15th). The men’s divison comprized 4 teams as did the women’s division. Games were played at the Airai court until rain washed out play on Saturday and the balance of the games were moved to the PalauNational Gymnasium.

GB HARRIS SMUUCH HALTS SDA KINGS IN ESC

NATIONAL 15 YEARS SQUADS FITNESS TESTS
The National Men’s and Women’s 15 Years Squads underwent their fitness tests last Saturday. For the men it was their second test while it was the first for the women. Results showed promise in the men’s squad with most players improving scores from February. Every 4 weeks throughout their program the squads undego a fitness test.
ESC – SDA KINGS A THREAT
With just 2 weeks left in the round robin series, the SDA Kings are starting to show form as they downed the previously unbeaten MES Dolphins yesterday by 47-28. With lots of hard practice sessions these past weeks, Coach Jason Park has the Kings improving at the right time. With back to back games this week the game experience could be just what last years champions need.
WNBL ON THE MONEY
If you are a betting person then you should get your money on MONEY to win the current WNBL competition. With just 3 weeks left in the league, Money remains undefeated and do not look like losing to their competitors. Bring It On are in second place and with their only loss so far being to Money would seem to be the only possible threat to Money’s chance of taking out the championship.
ABL RESULTS WEEK 8
With just 1 week of rounds remaining in this year’s ABL we find Ka’bong leading in Pool 1 with 16 points (8-0), Mercury Optimax in second with 16 points (7-2) and On Fire in third with 14 points(5-4). In Pool 2 it is Mesang Red Storm leading on 18 points (8-2) and 124.85%, Meda Boyz in second on 18 points (8-2) and 118.91% and Idid 4 Wheelers on 17 points (7-3)
ESC ELEMENTARY BOYS UNDER WAY
After the first week of the Elementary Boy’s League, it is GB Harris Smuuch and Meyuns Dolphins leading all teams in the standings. Both teams are undefeated so far and if they maintain their dominance, we shall have to wait until the 22nd March before they meet. Koror Elementary Stars A have played both leaders and having gone down to MES Dolphins by just 1 point could improve to be a contender at the completion of the rounds.
ABL RESULTS WEEK 7
With just 2 weeks of rounds remaining most teams are struggling to get into the top 4 in each pool. In Pool A only Ka’bong and Mercury Optimax look comfortable while in Pool B Mesang Red Storm and Meda Boyz could feel safe. Last weeks games saw some high scores with the Team Aqua and Airwaves being a beauty with the score 103 – 102 in favor of Aqua. Also there were several close games through the week that kept the fans enthralled.
WNBL LAST WEEK
The only game played in the Surangel and Sons WNBL last week saw Smooth Riders 66 beat Sam’s Kryptonite 61 in a good standard game. For the winners Charmaine Lukas had a game high 34 points while for Superman’s friends it was Sasha Walsh scoring 24 and Sweety Kalbesang got 14.
KSHL 12 YEARS AND UNDER LEAGUE TO START
The next KSHL to be played in 2011 will be for 12 Years and Under Boys and Girls and is scheduled to start on the 26th March. All boys and girls aged from 9 - 12 years are eligible to participate and will need to register with their Hamlet Representative by the end of next week. Games will be played each Saturday and the league will culminate in a Super League from which the squads for the 2011 Junior Development Camp will be selected.
NATIONAL WOMEN’S 15 YEARS SQUAD NAMED
The National Women’s 15 Years Squad for 2011 was named this weekend by Head Coach Happy Fritz and Assistant Coach Jaime Ngirausui following a series of trials at the National Gymnasium. The squad comprises a small number of players with experience in the current WNBL, while the balance competed in the recent ESC Elementary Girls School League.
MICRONESIAN REFEREE MAKES THE BIG TIME
Congratulations to Ramsie Joab from Pohnpei State in the FSM who has been invited to referee at the Under 19 World Championships in mid year. This is a HUGE boost for referees within Micronesia and great recognition of the standard that Ramsie has been able to achieve. Previously Jubilee Kuartei of Palau and Gabriel White of CNMI were invited to officiate at Junior World Championships. Hopefully Ramsie’s invitation will push other Micronesian referees to reach for the top.
OMELAU RECEIVES HIS CERTIFICATE
Omelau Beltau, the PBF’s 1,000th registered member received his certificate to commemerate the event today from PBF Vice President Kazuki “Topps” Sungino during the half time interval in the ESC Boys League.
ESC BOYS COMMENCE
Six teams will be seeing action in the Elementary School Competition (ESC) Central Division for boys which will be played at the Palau Nation Gym, commencing this week. Participating teams include SDA Elementary School (SDA); Meyuns Elementary School (MES); Koror Elementary School (KES) teams A and B; GB Harris Elementary School (GBH) and Maris Stella School (MSS).
NGARAAD WINS EAST COAST ELEMENTARY CAGEFEST
Team Ngaraad showed their wares as they defeated team Melekeok A, 46-30 to win the championship crown in the 2011 East Coast Elementary School Basketball League held at the Melekeok School court on Friday.
WNBL SECOND ROUND STARTS
The Surangel and Sons WNBL starts into the second round this week finding Money way out on top and undefeated. Bring It On are in second place with 9 points (4-1), Sam’s Kryptonite are in thrird with 8 points (3-2) and Spartans round out the top four places on 7 points (2-3).
BASKETBALL IN PALAU REACHES 1,000 MEMBERS
The PBF’s (Palau Basketball Federation) National Registration System recorded its 1,000th member this week. The NRS commenced in 2010 and will eventually see all basketball participants in Palau registered in the system. This includes all players, coaches, referees, score table officials and administrators. The 1,000th member is Omelau Beltau who will receive a certificate to mark the occasion.

Ka’bong showed their dominance in Pool 1 by thrashing On Fire in this week’s clash to remain the only undefeated team in Pool 1 (6-0) but they trail On Fire in the standings who are on 13 points (5-3). Mercury Optimax hold 3rd place on 11 points (5-1). In Pool 2 the college students hold the lead with PCC Mesekiu on 15 points (5-5) and Mesang Red Storm are on 13 points (6-1). Both Meda Boyz (5-2) and Stingers (4-4) are on 12 points.
BASKETBALL NEEDS GIRLS FOR NATIONAL SQUAD
Basketball Palau will be conducting selection trials next Saturday 26th February from 1.00 – 3.00pm at the National Gymnasium for the National Women’s 15 Years Squad. The Squad will be prepared during the next 3 months for a team to be selected to compete in the Micronesian 15 Years Basketball Tournament to be played here in Palau from 20-24th June.
KES WIN ELEMENTARY GIRL’S CHAMPIONSHIP
KES Stars managed to win the ESC Girl’s Championship as expected but not without a big challenge from MES Lady Dolphins in yesterday’s final. In a low scoring game in the first half it was the Lady Dolphins who held the upper hand and gave the Stars coaching staff some reason for concern during the half time interval. In the Consolation Final it was SDA Queens who came away with the win but again not before being pushed to their limit by GBH Smuuch.

ELEMENTARY GIRL’S – KES AND MES TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
The semi final between SDA Queens and MES Lady Dolpins lived up to its expectations of a thriller with the Lady Dolphins “stealing” a win in the dying moments! In the first semi, KES Stars won over GBH Smuuch as expected. The Championship game on Tuesday should be another good game between the Stars and the Lady Dolphins. In the consolation final Queens are expected to account for the Smuuch team.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS - GIRL’S SEMI FINALS
The ISL Elementary Schools Girls league has reached the semi final stage. The KES (Koror Elementary School) Stars have gone through undefeated to end up in first place and will play fourth placed GBH (G B Harris School) Smuuch in today's first semi. Tomorrow (Friday) the SDA (Seventh Day Adventist School) Queens, who finished in second place with just 1 loss to KES, will take on the MES (Meyuns Elementary School) Lady Dolphins in the second semi final.
WNBL RESULTS
Six teams are currently seeing action in the WNBL competition. This short league is to provide the women players with competition to make up for the 2010 WNBL that was cancelled due to the Micronesian Games taking place last year. A further WNBL will be held in May/June during the NBL season.

After 4 weeks of the ABL for 2011 we find On Fire still on top of Pool 1 with 10 points, despite a loss this week, with 4 wins and 2 losses. NATIONAL 15 YEARS MEN’S SQUAD NAMED
Following the final of the Super League on Saturday, PBF (Palau Basketball Federation) President Frank Kyota and Vice President Kazuki “Topps” Sungino announced the National 15 Years Men’s Squad for 2011. This squad will be prepared during the next few months for a team to be selected to compete in the inaugural M15BT (Micronesian 15 Years Basketball Tournament) to be held in Palau late June.
KSHL SUPER LEAGUE A HUGE SUCCESS
The first of the KSHL Super Leagues held on Saturday had everything! High quality games, exciting play, competitive match-ups, great individual performances, and to top it all off some close and thriliing games. Players from the four All Star teams were able to showcase their talents against strong opposition with the best players from the 14 and Under Boys League competing against the other best players. The scoring was generally lower due to better standard opposition in all games.
SUPER LEAGUE WILL ALLOWS STARS TO SHINE
The Super League for the KSHL 14 Years All Star Teams to be played this Saturday is being eagerly awaited to see many of the young Palau basketball stars in action. With all players fighting for a spot in the National 15 Years Men’s Squad to be announced after the final game on Saturday, players will be at their best to impress the selectors. The players have been practicing this week under National Men's Coach Johnny Kintaro and All Star coaches.

ALL STAR TEAMS NAMED FOR 14 YEARS SUPER LEAGUE
The 4 teams to compete in the Super League for 14 Years and Under Men have been named. The players and coaches were selected from teams in the KSHL 14 Years and Under competition that concluded on Saturday. The All Star teams will play 2 games next Saturday and from these games the National 15 Years and Under Men’s Squad will be selected and named following the final.
MEDA WIN KSHL 14 BOYS TITLE
The final of the KSHL 14 Years and Under Boys league was a close fought match between Ngermid and Meda for the first 3 quarters but in the final quarter Meda proved too strong to run away with a 66 – 43 win. In the consolation game for 3rd place Ngerchemai Ranchers and Meyuns played another close game until Ranchers took control in the dying minutes to win by 63-50. Trophies were presented to the three top teams by Koror State Legislator Wilson Ngirausui and assisted by Ivan Blesam of Koror State Youth Division.

NGERMID AND MEDA GO TO KSHL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
The semi finals provided a thrilling final quarter between Ngermid and Ngermechai Ranchers with a 1 point win to Ngermid, while in the second semi Meda ran away with the game in the last quarter to defeat Meyuns by 20 points. Echang South Coast and Peched advanced to the 5/6 play-off game while the Dngerongel/Mekatii Combo team will meet Peched Reds for positions 7 and 8 next Saturday.
MASTER’S LEAGUE COMMENCES
After a couple of years break, the Master’s Basketball League has been resurrected and with 8 teams now in competition is bringing lots of enjoyment to players over the age of 35 years. With large crowds each Sunday at the Palau High School Gymnasium, it is lots of fun along with serious competition.
ABL COMMENCES FOR SEASON 2011
Following the opening ceremony for the 2011 season of the ABL (Amateur Basketball League), games got under way this week. The ABL was introduced last year to cater for players not involved in the PBF premier league, the NBL (National Basketball League). This year 22 teams have entered and will play in two pools through until the end of April.
BASKETS GALORE RAIN DOWN IN KSHL 14 YEARS BOYS LEAGUE
After just 5 games of basketball in the 14 Years and Under Boys KSHL, some players have scored an astromical number of points. The top 10 scorers have amassed a total of 859 points, which is an average of 17.18 ppg. At present two top scorers are tied on 99 each (19.80 ppg). KSHL 14 YEAR BOYS QUARTER FINALS RESULTS
Following Saturday’s quarter finals round, Ngermid, Meda, Ranchers and Meyuns have advanced to the semi final stage while the Combo team, Peched, South Coast and Peched Reds will contest the qualification rounds to decide places 5-8. The semi final round is at the National Gymnasium next Saturday, 15th January.

KSHL 14 YEAR BOYS QUARTER FINALS ANNOUNCED
Following the completion of the round robin series in the 14 Years and Under Boys KSHL, the quarter finals will be played next Saturday, 8th January, at the Palau National Gymnasium. Winners of the quarter finals will advance to the semi finals and losers will advance to the qualification rounds for play-off position 5-8.
KSHL 14 YEAR BOYS DAY 5 – FRIDAY 31ST
With teams competing for top places in their pools it was always going to be an exciting day and the teams did not let the fans down as they battled to the end to finish on top. The other teams were also fighting for a quarter finals berth and added to the excitement.
PBF 750TH REGISTERED MEMBER
The 750th member of the PBF (Palau Basketball Federation) National Registration System is Julius Thomas. Julius is 11 years old and is a player in the Dngerongel/Meketii Combo team playing in the current KSHL (Koror State Hamlet League) 14 Years and Under Boys League.
KSHL 14 YEAR BOYS DAY 4 – THURSDAY 30TH
The fourth day of competition brought some excellent and exciting games. After 4 rounds there only two teams undefeated and these are Meyuns and Meda in Pool B. These two teams play tomorrow for top place in their Pool. In Pool A Echang South Coast and Ngermid will meet for top spot in their Pool. Peched and Ngerchemai Ranchers have finished pool play and must wait for tomorrow’s games to see where they will finish.
KSHL 14 YEAR BOYS DAY 3 – WEDNESDAY 29TH
After 3 days of play the teams are now starting to sort themselves out in the pool rankings. Read on for these details and the current top scorers and fouls. The games today continued to showcase players who may be selected into the All Star teams to compete in the Super League at the end of January from which the National 15 Years Men’s Squad will be selected.
KSHL 14 YEAR BOYS DAY 2 – TUESDAY 29TH
After just 2 days of competition in the KSHL 14 and Under Boys Christmas League, it is Echang South Coast in Pool A and Meyuns In Pool B who remain unbeaten to date. National Coaches watching the games are impressed with the athleticism and skill of many players.
KSHL 14 YEAR BOYS DAY 1 – MONDAY 27TH
Following the opening ceremony conducted by NBDO Topps Sungino where the league was opened by Gino Smau representing the Koror State Youth Division, the inaugural 14 Years and Under Boys League commenced. With 10 teams competing for the title and divided into two pools, the round robin tournament will be played daily this week at the Palau National Gymnasium with 4 games each day.
KSHL 14 UNDER BOYS TO COMMENCE
The first league in the new KSHL (Koror State Hamlet League) will commence on Monday 27th December for 14 Years and Under Boys. Some 10 teams will compete in this new league, representing various Hamlets around the State of Koror. The league will be played in 2 pools of 5 teams and the rounds will be played each day during the next week while schools are on leave for the Christmas – New Year break.

What a final series it has been with close scores in every one of the 3 games. With the game score at one game each it was Galaxy that managed to win on the siren in last night’s decider by just 2 points in what has to be one of the closest final series ever seen in Palau basketball.
SURANGEL KINGS TIE GBL FINAL SERIES AT 1-1
In another close battle in game 2 of the Rudimch Enterprises Government / Business League Final Series, Surangel Kings has tied the series against Galaxy Builders at one game each. Tonights game 3 will decide the GBL Championship in what should be a thriller!!
WOMEN COACHES APPOINTED TO NATIONAL POSITIONS
Basketball Palau has announced the appointment of two women to fill the coaching positions for the National 15 Years and Under Women’s Squad. Veteran players Happy Fritz and Jaime Ngirausui will fill the Head Coach and Assistant Coach roles respectively.
GALAXY TAKES GAME 1 IN GBL FINAL SERIES
In a very even game Galaxy Builders just managed to hang on to win by 1 point over Surangel Kings in the first of the three game final series in the Rudimch Enterprises Government / Business League. In another close game in the Consolation Final for third place, MOF Omesangel just managed to best MPIIC by 2 points (75-73).
PMA ARE TOP BASKETBALL SCHOOL IN VARSITY FOR 2010
Congratulations to PMA (Palau Misionary Academy – the SDA High School) as the Champion school in basketball for 2010 in the ISL High School competitions. PMA won the Girls and Boys Varsity Leagues and was second in the Junior Boys Varsity league.
PMA WARRIORS WIN BOY’S VARSITY TITLE
In an exciting final the PMA Warriors won over last year’s champions EHS Knights in Friday’s final to the tune of 80-68. With their more controlled offence and aggressive defence the Warriors led at each change but the “never say die” Knights gave them a shock from midway in the last quarter.
GBL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT SEMI FINALS
In the Rudimch Enterprises Government / Business League Championship Series semi finals this week both Surangel Kings and Galaxy Builders advanced to the Championship game. In a very tight game Surangel Kings won by 1 point over MPIIC (Ministry of Infrastructure, Industries and Commerce), while Galaxy Builders had a more comfortable win over MOF (Ministry of Finance) Omsangel by 10 points.
BOY’S VARSITY SEMIS DECIDED
The ISL High Schools Boy’s Varsity League semi finals were played this week and as expected PMA Warriors and EHS Knights advanced to the championship game on Friday. The Warriors defeated PHS Spiders C, while the Knights eliminated PHS Spiders B.

BASKETBALL PALAU TAKES HUGE STEP FORWARD
Basketball Palau’s initiative to develop the Koror State Hamlet League into a state wide series of leagues is seen by some to be the biggest step forward since the implementation of the NBL (National Basketball League) so many years ago. The KSHL leagues will cater for youth and junior age groups from 18 years down to 8 years old. It will expand the previously successful KSHL conducted by the Koror State Youth Division.
WESTERN UNION WIN BACK TO BACK FBL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Western Union again proved their dominance in the FBL (Filipino Basketball League) by defeating Rangers in game 3 of the final series to repeat last year’s finish as FBL Champions for 2010. After a disruptive season, the FBA (Filipino Basketball Association) must be satisfied with a successful year that saw new clubs enter the league and emerge as future possible contenders.
WESTERN UNION WIN SECOND GAME IN FBL FINAL SERIES
Western Union took game 2 in the three game final series by defeating Rangers decisively 73-51 to send the series to game 3. With Western Union looking to repeat last year’s Championship win and Rangers trying to repeat their win back in 2007, it will be a fight to the finish in next Sunday’s decider.
PNOC AND GALAXY WIN GBL TITLES
PNOC Mercury Optimax won the Government Division while Galaxy Builders took out the Business Division of the Rudimch Enterprises Government / Business League last week. The GBL now moves into the Championship series with a single elimination tournament where hopefully the two division winners will meet in the final, although some of the other teams will have a say in that result.
RUDIMCH ENTERPRISES GBL FINALISTS
The finalists in the Government Division and Business Division of the Rudimch Enterprises Government / Business League have been decided. In the Government Division PNOC Optimax will meet up with MOF Omsangel while in the Business Division Galaxy Builders will take on Surangel and Sons for their championsip.
CHANGES TO NATIONAL COACH SELECTIONS
Basketball Palau has made significant changes to the format of selection for National Coaching postions. This has been brought about by the possibility of having to find 16 coaches to cover the 8 National Squads to compete in MBC (Micronesian Basketball Confederation) tournaments during the next 3 years.
ISL BOYS VARSITY LEAGUE TAKING SHAPE
The ISL High Schools Boy’s Varsity League is well under way and after the initial games it would appear that EHS Knights and PMA Warriors are shaping up as the major contenders for the title.
NDP FOR 2011-2012
The Palau Basketball Federation (PBF) has adopted its NDP (National Development Program) for the next two years. The National Program Committee (NPC) has accepted a number of innovative changes that were put forward at this year’s Annual Review Meeting. The commencement of community leagues for juniors and youth in all Koror Hamlets, All Star teams, Super Leagues for each level of competition, a new National selection system and many more courses to be conducted under the NAS, are all part of this exciting package.
RUDIMCH ENTERPRISES GBL REACHES SEMIS
The Rudimch Enterprises Government / Business League has reached the semi finals stage with all but one position in the Business Division remaining to be filled. In tonight’s quarter final it will be between Sam’s Sharks and PPR Shark Attack to decide the remaining spot.
RANGERS TAKE GAME ONE
Rangers surprised most people by taking the first game in the 3 game finals series over favorites Western Union. The big punters had Western Union to take the title in a whitewash in 2 games but Rangers proved that their two losses to Western Union in the rounds make little difference when it comes to the finals. But it took an extra period to get the win after the score was tied at the end of regulation time.
ISL BOYS VARSITY TO COMMENCE
The final league in the ISL High Schools basketball calendar for 2010 commences on Monday. The Boy’s Varsity League will see 7 teams compete for this year’s Championship. EHS (Emmaus High School) Knights will look to defend their title, and based on their performance in the Junior Boy’s Varsity League earlier this month should be a strong chance for back to back champions.
PMA WARRIORS WIN GIRL’S VARSITY
PMA Warriors won the 2010 ISL Girl’s Varsity League yesterday by defeating PHS A Spiders by 64-45. In a close first half the PHS team looked like they might cause an upset, but the power and experience of the Warriors took over on the second half to score a comfortable win. With 3 of the National Women’s Team in their ranks, PMA were always favorites to win the trophy.
