In the absense of a swimming pool, Yap looks to take advantage of its most treasured natural resources, the sea to offer up an Open Water Swimming Program for these 2018 Micronesian Games. Open water swimming is included on the programs at major international meets and requires great stength and endurance as well as a canny knack for pacing and tactics in order to get the best results.
Open water swimming has been the basis of competition in surf life saving and in Royal life saving competitions dating back to the late 1800's. In addition it is included in sports such as triathlon and as a challenge pursuit by extreme athletes who target specific stretches of water such as the English Channel in order to follow their passion for adventure.
Two indivdual events will be offered, over 2.5km and 5km for individuals, and a team relay event as well.
